Description
• Mechanical pencils on sketch paper.• Texture + colour added in digitally.
-----------
Just some random sketches I did over the course of two days and on two different sheets of paper. Most of them are originally thought and created (except for Flynn Rider on the top).
No references used!
I'm not sure whether this should sit in scraps or not. Perhaps eventually. c:

huh...the girl w/ the helmet reminds me of a grown-up sexy Astrid. she's awesome!
love the beast character next to her <3 that is all kinds of WOW. I love the shading you gave his hood.
what negative points I was going to point out have already been pointed out...except the play of light on the candle. I would think there'd be very little shadows at the top of the candle. also: second light source? I'm just a bit surprised.
so, are you gonna give these characters a story?

Ha ha, thanks.
I admit the light source was a wreck up. I just couldn't really be bothered with it since it is well... just a sketch really. But ah well.
And probably not. I just like drawing weird and wacky characters now and then to pass up the time.
But thanks for the comment! <3

Oh Lord oh Lord.
First, for future reference, do you prefer me leaving comments here, or on ZU?
Okay - well first thing, which I practically joygasm at telling you is;
Your style gurl. You has it.
It's instantly recogniseable and uniquely and distinctly you!
You had it all along, you ujust needed to experiment with original pieces to showcase it!
These are the thngs I see when just glancing over it at first look thtat immidiately tell me you are the artist (in a random order);
1) The shading: You are the queen of that lineshading/crosshatching bizniz. Ignoring how just incredibly well utilized and extremely well drawn and effective they are, the use of such different pressures for different tones and shades, and the overall texture they give is instantly yours!
2) Hair: Everytime you draw hair, whether short, long or Rapunzel-Long, there's is this very distinctive "feather-like" quality to it.
3) The colouring - whether full on colour, sepia or whatnot, the colouring always has this effect as if the subject painted were made out of some marble - there's a very delicate stone-like effect - especially with traditional paints, like with Holly's Four Link pic you did for her.
4) And lastly features - the proportionsof the body, facial feature placements and general anatomy are all recogniseable as yours - thingfs like an otherwise clean-faced model with distinctive eyes and noses, and then full lips really help attribute elements as being done by you.
These are just the most obious ones for me - the entire sketches have a lot more elements that make me think of you, but they work together in sync anyways. And again, your shading and depth is just astounding and something I aspire to.
These scream with your originality, individuality and signature style, gurl!

Oh my god SD! *is speechless*
Your feedback ALWAYS makes me smile! Always!
I think I've gotten over my little style crisis back then and I'm happy to hear that you can "see" that my works are done by me, no matter the styles I try now and then. It's given me more confidence with what I'm creating these days.
Also, it's up to you whether you post these comments on either ZU or dA. ^^ I honestly don't mind.
Love you heaps! !

I am *so glad to know you've worked through it!
Are you kidding, even with the fanarting, I could tell it was you by the hair and clothes and shading style - but I think now you've tried some original sketches, that the full force of your technique can be seen without comparisons or re-directing to pre-established characters. :]
But yeah. with those sketch batches, you can clearly see all the elements that single you out as the artist behind it!
Like a giant "DRAWN BY EL BIATCHES" watermark was put on it!
I think here is easier to post on, since the comment isn't lost among lots of quoted posts and split up replies, but also want to show your ZU thread some love too, and thought it rude to have simply quoted one reply form one site, and lazily posted it onto the other.
LOVE YOU TOO GURL
And keep on that arting! It's so inspiring and a pleasure to watch you grow! ^______^

Hahaha! Awww...
Thank you! You always make me smile!
I was just scared before of being some kind of "copy machine" but hearing stuff like this from A LOT of people is making me feel more comfortable in drawing fanarts. <3
And that's okay. I really don't mind where ZUers post their comments. Here or on ZU - it's completely fine. <3
If here works best for you - at all means, please continue with it. No matter where you post, I enjoy reading anything you have to say SD!
Haha! I definitely won't stop drawing anytime soon!!

You are in no way a copy machine. Even with your fanarts, every pencil I saw had a very distinct EL look on it - agian, the features I tried to list like the shading, textures, hair and clothes - instantly you!
Yeah, will probably reply here, as in the thread, quotes get split apart and mixed/replied to separately whereas here, they stay whole and are probably easier to read (hopefully! )
Sorry for the late reply - been hugely busy irl. D=
(Also - still haven't forgotten that PM - will *definately* reply to it - just so taken with things irl, again - so huge apologies for that)

I'm so happy to hear that - you have no idea! I love drawing fan arts, but that was the one thing I was scared of!
True. XD I go on here a lot more than ZU anyway, so I'm bound to check messages and comments here than on ZU.
But, whatever is best for you, I don't mind either way!
And that's alright! Please, by all means take your time SD. There's no rush.

I work my way from left to right since I'm right-handed. It stops me from smudging my works. And I keep a clean piece of paper under my hand just to make sure that I don't smudge my stuff.

Haha, every time anything drawn by you appears in my inbox I recognise it at first glance.
You should try drawing people with beard again once in a while. How often did you try that before? It looks pretty good, I think!
In this sketch it just looks a bit strange that the left half of the moustache looks rather full, whereas the left half is not as impressive and has a lot thinner outlines. (I know it's just a sketch, but maybe you haven't seen that).
But, as I said, the rest of that face looks great!
And if you look at the girl at the lower left side you might see the symmetry of her eyes is not quite correct; the lower lid of the left eye is a bit too high, I think.
But I adore how you drew the fur and her female figure alltogether. It looks lovely.
I like all of the sketches, but that man with the beard draws my attention the most, because it looks unusal to me, since I am used to your usually very smooth faces.
And these squids.....they look so adorable and happy!

Jasqreate In reply to DeviantIrk [2011-02-14 03:32:35 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad to hear that!
I see what you mean with the moustache part. I didn't want to add too much to him, otherwise it just would not be a sketch anymore. And subconsciously I add too much detail to things naturally, so I didn't want to go over the edge just to test myself. But yeah it does looks odd. It looks like someone just stuck it on.
Ah the girl's face? That was done on purpose in order of exaggerating cartoon character expressions without going over the edge. She's giving that whole 'eyebrow' thing. But thanks. <3
I aim to try new things now and then. I don't think I've drawn old guys with beard before, but it is fun touching subjects that I've never done before, so I might do more of these from time to time. Why thank you!

Haha, I see what you mean! Sometimes you intend to make a sketch but end up adding a bit here and there until you think "okay, why not finishing the whole thing?" and in the end you work on a complete picture whereas you simply wanted to make a sketch! XD
Uh. Okay! I thought I better mention it although I really was not sure.
You have never drawn something like this before? Wow! I am impressed. I mean, this does not really look like a "first try"!
No problem!

One of my favorites is the old guy on the bottom group.
Your "sketches" are so wonderful it's almost criminal to call them sketches. <3

Thanks Tonch! !
Ah, the old guy? He was fun to draw. My sister was playing Paper Mario TTYD when I started drawing these, and she was up to the part when Bobbery becomes part of your party, so I felt like drawing someone in human form that somehow would represent him. Love that game. <3
Oh well. XD They're "sketches" to me. Quick stuff that doesn't take much time.
