Description
In a world where the German offensives of the summer of 1942 had much less success, the war in the European theater ended much faster, the Soviets didn't advance as westwards and everything was rainbows and unicorns forever. This is not that world.
The Western Allies landed in France in summer of 1943 and despite the fact that the war in Europe ending in the winter of 1944-45, they faced a less worn out and still mobile Wehrmacht across France, the Benelux, Italy and Central Europe. Hundreds of thousands of American casualties cost the support of Roosevelt's administration and the later the elections. The GOP won a disputed election in 1944 and after installing a government of "clean officers" in its occupation zone in Germany and then winning the war in the Pacific, the United States returned for a short period to isolationism.
There was no United Nations in New York, there was no Marshall Plan, the colonial powers of France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were forced to withdraw before the anti-colonial surge in Asia to save their battered economies. West Germany and the Kingdom of Italy, far less punished by the Western Allies, quickly reintegrated into the new order. The victors, both Western and Eastern were forced to reconstitute a League of Nations with much more authority than its first iteration.
Everything changed in the 1950s, China fell and the KMT was forced to flee to Taiwan, Korea was reunified under the communist government of Pyongyang, and for a time it was feared that the newly-democratic India would follow.
Finally, with the 1954 communist victory in the Brazilian elections, the United States re-emerged from its shell, quickly forming a coalition with its allies, some of the nervous Chinese neighbours, and its own former Japanese enemies to contain the Red Horde in the Pacific, this American bloc tacitly diplomatically supported the USSR in the halls of the LoN during the process of dismantling colonial empires in the Americas and Africa in exchange for another ally against Deng Xiaoping's new communist China.
In the Middle East the Soviets and Americans during the 1960s and 1970s supported the pan-Arabists of Egypt, Syria and Iraq against pro-European Israel and Lebanon. The US and SEATO fought an inconclusive war in Indonesia against Chinese backed revolutionaries in the 80s. In Iberia fascism fell at last and democracy returned once again in the 70s. Chile under first Allende and later Jara followed Brazil's steps toward Marxism...
History continued.
The USSR finally collapsed in the early 1990s after a period of internal political struggles in the 1980s between the Sablinists reformers and the Yazovists hardliners won by the latter with disastrous consequences. The fall of the Soviet Union and its bloc allowed both Europe and China to reduce their military budgets and as a consequence, the US did too, a Detente was reached and at last, after 40 years of Cold War, world peace and the End of History seemed just around the corner.
It wasn't going to happen.
What started as a simple officer coup against the pro-American Saudis turned into a bloody civil war. George H.W. Bush administration deployed a budget-stricken 101st Airborne Division to the region to protect the oil fields. They were going into a trap, a nuclear booby trap. On July 4, 2000, in a flash thousands of American soldiers died before the terrified eyes of the entire world watching it on live TV. To everyone's surprise, the government, paralyzed by indecision, accusations of incompetence and the disintegration of the Republican PartyΒ opted for a quick and messy withdrawal from the region, abandoning its allies and causing their defeat. Meanwhile, the commanding officer of the 101st, General Milley, was seething, thousands of his men had died for nothing but political and economic interests, while the politicians in Washington did nothing but bicker between themselves. On September 11, 2000, on a day that will live in infamy, in an event more typical of Latin America or Africa than of a modern democracy, he and other officers joined forces and marched on Washington, overthrowing the government, installing a junta, and becoming a worldwide pariah overnight. Tens of thousands of Americans fled to Canada, Australia, Japan and even their old European rivals bringing with them their money and in case of corporations their actives and patents.
The First Arab Civil War had an unexpected consequence, the battles around the Holy City of Mecca gave rise to a radical branch of Islamism that soon spread throughout the Islamic world. In Indonesia the ossified communist government finally fell to a general uprising, in the Sahel and Central Asia terrorist groups rose up against the governments of those regions.
In one of the most important flashpoints in history, the Guerra de la Pampa (a series of skirmishes in the Southern Cone between Argentina, its allies on the one hand, and Brazil and Chile on the other) during the southern summer of 2017 almost ended in a nuclear exchange when Argentine air defense systems detected a single Brazilian ICBM launch; Fortunately for humanity, the Argentine commanding officer decided against all procedure to ignore the information that saved South America from a nuclear cataclysm.
Since then the march of history has followed its inexorable course, Russia has finally officially joined Europe leaving Eastern Yugoslavia and Hungary as the last states on the continent not integrated militarily and economically. In Arabia, war has broken out again between the Republic of Arabia, the Hashemite rebels supported by Jordan and Kuwait, the Islamists and some resurgent Saudis. In Africa, the EAF and contingents of African Union troops have entered Mozambique to support the anti-government democratic forces.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Milley's authority is, at last, collapsing, insurgents of all stripes are preparing for an uprising, and martial law has gone into effect in multiple states. Nobody knows how the story of the Military Junta will end, but one thing is certain, the American people will fight for Liberty once again.
P.S. Yeah, the Milley bit was loosely based on MW's storyline.
