Description
Since some of us have been sitting at home yearning for the curfews to stop eventually, I figured I could make something “educational” so to say and give you some insight into my mother tongue which happens to be German. I’ve picked several rather unusual idiomatic phrases and words and this one stood out the most for me as it appears to be a really odd word if you hear or see it for the first time. In order to make this “lesson” a bit more interesting and gorgeous, New York City’s hotshot Rita volunteered to take the role of the teacher to make sure you won’t forget what you’re learning here 😉
Anyway, you’re probably wondering now: What the heck is a “Kummerspeck”??
Well, literally, it means “sorrow bacon” but it has absolutely nothing do with depressed stripes of meats whatsoever. When you are talking about someone having “Kummerspeck”, you are actually referring to excess weight or body fat gained due to emotional overeating, the noun “-speck” being a endearing synonym for having a bit of a chubby tummy in German. You would probably hear it from someone who has had a really hard time because something bad or sad happened so he/she resorted to eating a lot to forget his/her sorrows, causing his/her body to gain weight from all the eating.
There you have it! If you’re interested in more unusual and funny words or idiomatic phrases from other languages, just let me know in the comments and I’ll try and see to it (featuring Rita again or other girls of course)
