Description I'm uploading this here even though I know it won't get any traffic.

I made it for the benefit of a few rescue groups up here that hold information sessions while fighting the blight that is BSL (Breed Specific Legislation). I saw something similar done that was being passed around on facebook and thought "I can do one better.", so I did.

Dogs were based off random photos found online. Redrawn and simplified to keep the chart looking clean and uncluttered. I think it turned out pretty cool.

Some people would argue that Boxers and Bostons aren't "bully", but I disagree. Bostons are direct descendants of fighting dogs (the other branch went off and created the AmStaff and APBT), and Boxers (especially when their tail and ears aren't cut off) have the same "look" even though they're more from the Boar-hunting Mastiff side and not so much the Bulldog (but same can be said of the Dogo, which is a Mastiff created to hunt Hogs, that is often tossed in with the "bully" breeds).

Anyway, enjoy.

Other breeds commonly misidentified by the media/uneducated people as "pit bulls" include:

-Presa Canario
-Cane Corso
-Bull Mastiff
-French Mastiff (Dogue de Bordeaux)
-Catahoula Leopard Dog
-Valley Bulldog
-Fila Brasilerio
-Boerboel
-Ca De Bou
-Alano Espanol
-Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
-Patterdale Terrier
-Olde English Bulldog

And I'm sure there are a few I missed...

This is amazing. Great infographic and the dogs are beautifully drawn. I like that they are in show poses.

One of my aunts has always had Boxers and now also has a Boston Terrier. I remember going to her house as a kid after she had recently gotten a new female Boxer. She was warned that this dog in particular didn't like kids so to be careful. I sat down in this little chair and Stella, the dog, came right up to me. I loved on her for most of the night. My aunt was so surprised at first but then realized that the reason Stella didn't typically like kids was because they weren't calm around her and would yank on her ears and hurt her. I of course didn't do that. I was calm the whole time and always let her come up to me on her own. After that, every time I went to my aunt's house Stella was so excited to see me and always let me pet her.

Most big dog breeds that I've met have always been such gentle giants. The only violent dogs I've been around are small dogs who overcompensate for their size by having the biggest attitudes ever. I hate that "Bully" breeds are still usually the last dogs to get adopted from shelters and are vilified so badly by people.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (It's a separate breed from the American.) is also often confused as a Pit Bull.

I own an XL blue and white American Bully, like the one you have pictured, and I get told all the time; "Wow, you have such a pretty and big Pit Bull!" And no matter that I have told them repeatedly, that Athena is an American Bully, they still call her a Pit Bull. And also call her a boy, even though I correct them on that too. And I don't think I've ever even heard of a guy with the name Athena, as it is the name of a Greek goddess after all. I even got her a hot pink collar to help them realize she is in fact female. LOL I think I need to get a big bow and tie it on her collar or draw the female symbol in black permanent marker on her collar. People hear what they want to and see what they want to, and no amount of correcting them seems to work sadly.

And on the topic of Pit Bulls, it is extremely rare they will attack a human. Pit Bulls are very social animals and love humans quite strongly unlike many other breeds that just tolerate us. Did you know that those tiny little sausage dogs aka Dachshunds have actually eaten babies?! And I mean human babies, not puppies. There have been at least 3 cases in the US in recent years and did they make it into the big news headlines, heck no! But any so called Pit Bull like dog attack is a big news story. And I swear almost all those attacks are because the dogs were abused by the person who they attacked. Little kids are the worst, as their parents just let them abuse animals and then get angry when the dog defends itself. There has been a huge rise in cats attacking owners too, and in every case it turns out they let their kids torment the cat.

At least American bulldogs, boxers (mostly) & Boston terriers aren't very aggressive anymore; not raised to fight...
They are much more comfortable with families

American Pit Bulls aren't even fighting dogs. They were bred from one dog found and used in the trenches in WWI, hence the name "Pit Bull." It's unfortunate their past has become so far forgotten that people don't even remember they weren't originally fighting dogs.

Thank you! I am taking this to the local shelters and adding a few others to it to hopefully inspire the desire to educate themselves rather than continue with the intentional ignorance that most run on.

Thank you, Thank you on behalf of all of the bullies mistakenly identified breeds out there!

I love how a shortened version of this has made its way around Facebook. They don't give artist credit and they don't even spell bully right. When I see it, I always link it back here. Thanks for your great art!

I posted it on Facebook ages ago for some of my Rescue and Breed Advocate friends to use. I'm not surprised it's being spread around (though when you say "shortened" do you mean edited to be shorter, or exclude some dogs?).

Corrected, edited and many of the breeds excluded. Let me see if I can find the link for you. It's been on the Keep the Bull Breed Free page several times as the shortened version. [link]

Love this! It's a great guide to breed standards! I have an American Pit Bull Terrier and she doesn't meet the standards (she's a bit overweight and looks like a log with long twiggy legs) which I don't mind since all dogs are individuals. Still though, helps a lot when looking at the other bullies : )

Buldogue Campeiro is a breed that deserves to be listed at least. It's not a famous breed, but sure is bully. For those who don't know it's a brazilian breed that really looks like the "original" Bulldog. For more info, visit Molosso di JerivΓ‘ web site.

I work at the state humane society and have been there for nine months now... coming from someone who has never, ever had a dog of her own or been around one prior to working there, I can say without most prejudice almost all my favorites have been American Staffordshire Terriers and/or American Pitt Bull Terriers (and one incredible Rottweiler). They're just such amazing dogs. It's so sad that they're attacked so.

Also, people are really eager to label something as "Pitt Bull" when it is clearly NOT. For instance there's a Lab/Shepherd mix that people keep telling looks like a Pitt Bull. Not... even close...

My 7month old stafforshire terrier (Bos) was attacked by a Rotweiler when my pup was only 4 months old. We were walking down the sidewalk in the city minding our own. Someone in front of us was walking with his rottie and a skateboard under his arm. He stopped and deliberately dropped the leash to get something out his pocket. The rottie turned around and bolted for me and Bos. Thankfully the rottie didn't bite me or Bos as I quickly lifted him off the ground, but my poor baby was scared out of his wits. Kiyi-ing for a good 5 mins after the dog was gone. My boy has never done anything to lable hiim as a "bully" dog. Thank you for this chart. The depiction between sizes and the names are great for educating the less educated about dogs.

They've got serious health issues unfortunately. Especially with their joints...especially the XL-catagory. I've met a small one, and he was a rescue, who could have changed my mind about owning one, if he could have been re-homed where I live instead of being shipped out (due to BSL here).

Satsujin89 In reply to jaxxblackfox [2012-01-30 07:39:41 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure they do.... they practically waddle. But I've met a few like them. They're SO sweet. My neighbor got one of our 'accident' puppies and he's super hyper and happy. He saw one of them squat bulls and ran out to meet him. That dog was just all too happy to try and play with him. XD It was super adorable.
Ugh.... BSL.... I'd go apeshit crazy if I had to deal with a BSL down here. D< They'd have a fight on their hands too if they tried to take my babies from me. It'd be like "It'll be safer for everyone if you just leave them here." XD

That happens a lot. Most non dog-savvy people can't tell the difference between them even though the look completely different. It's like not being able to tell a Lab' from a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (they look completely different even though both are Retrievers).
