Description As progress shots were requested, I figured I would toss this up. The Leigh Rear image from CG start to finish, a good one to go with since it is so simplistic. begins with solids on lineart and goes from there, very self explanatory. Gives a good idea about how I CG in Painter about 1/2 of the time. I sometimes go from lights to darks, and sometimes do in betweens. It depends on how I feel when I begin, really, and if I am painting 100% digitally or not. Before this gets too wordy, it was drawon on typing paper, with solids and BG done in Photoshop and all the rest done in Painter.
Thanks~

Looks awesome, just wondering, which tool do you use to shade?
Airbrush? Brush? Other? :V

Yeah haha, sorry for that, a friend explained to me that painter has these brushes named after traditional medium heh.
I didn't knew that because I'm not familiar with painter and thought you were making fun of me or something >XD
Again, sorry for that, stupid misunderstanding

Thanks for sharing your coloring technique. I've been wanting to color in my mecha for some time but have yet to start, I was gonna do the coloring the traditional way using colored pencils, but now I see how you do it I might try CGing it. I use ArcSofts' PhotoStudio which is almost similar to PhotoShop I think but possibly with a different user interface system. Thanks again for sharing you tips.

As though I didn't already love the piece, now I can see the procedure that you used to make it.

Can I just worship you now or something? Wouldn't that be easier than continually ranting about your awesomeness?

the shading and all that is amazing, but the only part bothering me, is that the area right under her rump, is the same color all the was down her leg... i kinda cant help but thing it should still get darjer yet, as it goes up...

but you may have done that in the original... so...

"round camelhair, low feature and low bleed. That's it~" - so you say... Wow, I simply cannot get an effect like that in photoshop. I've been trying for 5 years. 1/3 way down the tail in step (2). I'm afraid to check how much Painter costs! ^_^;

Nice progress work of coloring. I'm still experimenting with color in Photoshop myself and it's nice to see the different steps. I have a whole lot of black and white stuff that desperately needs to be colored, but this gives me hope to tackle that project. I love your drawing style btw. very unique looking characters

So-naa [2006-11-15 06:33:11 +0000 UTC]

I hope you will see this at all, cause I can see you get lots of comments... but what tools do you use in photoshop and painter? It's intensely smooth. I just wondered how you made that happen. Do you use layers ?

Btw I think your style is unique. I don't know why everyone compares it. Style isn't just technique. It's a overall feeling of the work, the characters, the details, the techniques, the colors, etc. I really feel your artwork is unique unto yourself. It's truely beautiful. Thanks for sharing your progressions

JayAxer In reply to So-naa [2006-11-15 07:06:49 +0000 UTC]

in painter i use the round camelhair brush and when i make selections i use the lasso. i do use layers: one layer for the lineart, then another layer for the actual colours. so i use 2 layers generally.

*squeal* Thank you so much for answering, I appreciate you taking the time to!! Painter has so many brushes it's amazing lol I've been playing with it for a while but never realized that aspect with the camel hair brush. You are truely an amazing artist! Thanks again!!

really nice progression. Explains a lot. However, it would be easier to follow if the sets of color were labeled somehow, it's not obvious which sets go where since they are so similar.

You just reminded me that I have Painter 9 installed and that I need to learn how to use it. Thank you.

Thanks for this. Ive been trying to Improve and refine my crappy doodles in painter for the last few months. This will be a GREAT help for the coloring stages in giving my amuture crap a more professional finished look (along with about 1000 more hours of practice.) Guys who are TRULY skilled like you are one of the things that drives me to constantly push myself and work to bring my own work up to the impossible standards in my mind... heh.
I'll get it, or give myself a stroke trying.

The finished looks like a 3D render but for the lines... or maybe it still does. Cel shaded?

After work brain does not work properly.

It's cool though and it is interesting to see how some artists work. It opens up possibilities.
