They could have at least given the choice to get with Faye over Celica. At least she would at least have had a purpose instead of just being there for no reason.

I mean, they're a pretty loyal remake and Alm's pretty head over heels for Celica since they were kids. Wouldn't make much sense for him to pick Faye or Clair over her.
Clair also has a crush on Alm but at the same time she has more purpose to be there than Faye.

But that's the thing; because the ending is exactly the same as the original version, there is no point of Faye even existing if her only characteristic is to be in love with Alm. The only thing that makes Faye worth having is that she gets an exclusive spell if you turn her into a cleric.
As for Clair they actually change her feelings for Alm in Echoes. In the original Gaiden, Clair reluctantly marries Gray and even goes as far as to tell him that Alm was the one she really wanted. Echoes changes this by having Clair and Alm's relationship be completely platonic and them being very close friends with her willingly marrying Gray out of love.
