Description
This is my submission for Rittenhouse Trading Cards for their new Marvel Comics sketch card line. Even if I don't make anything happen, this piece was a real joy to create. These are all my favorite Marvel characters, and drawing them in my style was such a blast. From left to right, top to bottom (in case you can't tell):
Wolverine
Spider-Ham/Mary Jane Water Buffalo
She-Hulk
Sub Mariner
Storm
Captain America/Red Skull
Green Goblin
Thing
Howard the Duck/Beverly
Spider-Woman
All characters copyright blahblahblah like you don't already know.....

I love the more stylised sketch cards that are out there and this is easily one of the best.
Nice work! I love the Punch-face Green Goblin!

I just caught wind of a Spider Ham/Howard the Duck crossover that took place in one of the Marvel Tales backups. I may break down and buy a copy if I can't find it to download anywhere.

Was this recently, or an old issue from the late 80's? I recall Spider-Ham being a backup feature in Marvel Tales for awhile, which I loved. But my favorite artist on the book, co-creator Mark Armstrong, left the book after the first few issues. I actually wanted to contact him to draw a Dead Duck pin-up awhile back, but the guy's disappeared. The Hogzilla issue's artist was my second favorite. Great bigfoot style of cartooning. And Steve and Mike Mellor's backup stories were brilliant. Their cartooning styles were like a looser, funnier Milton Knight.

Oldschool. I don't think they make Marvel Tales anymore. After some severe Googling last year, I managed to find this: [link] So, he's at least alive and online! I wonder if Stan Sakai would know where he his... I can't find the Mellors either. The most recent thing I found was Steve Mellor's Ren & Stimpy cartoon, Jerry the Bellybutton Elf.
I'm on a huge Spider-Ham kick right now. I might do a lineup. I really think they should do a movie or TV series or something. Funny animal CG movies and Superhero flicks are so huge right now. To me, Spider-Ham is a no-brainer, but that's me.

I would LOVE a Spider-Ham animated film, or TV series at least, but the style would have to be either in the Armstrong of Mellor camp. Steve Mellor stopped cartooning went into acting a few years back, as I learned from Bobby London who co-created Air Pirates and Dirty Duck. Such a loss to our craft...I have almost a complete collection of the Spider-Ham series from my childhood, except for the Marvel Tails one shot that he appeared in prior to his series.

I'd heard the story sixteen years ago, but I'd never seen the strips firsthand. That was a real treat. London's such a rebel genius. Thanks for showing 'em to me, Kyle. And thanks for sending the Spider-Ham pages! Man, I love the good ol' days!

By the way, don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but using an obscure Season 3 Scooby Doo villain as your user name is total brilliance and wicked cool!

Thanks. I've got a red beard, but he's first season. Beast of the Bottomless Lake was too long and I think someone took "the Cat Creature."

Thanks! Thus far no word from Rittenhouse, and I can't say I have much confidence in them getting back with me, or if they do, accepting my submission, but it did my heart good to draw my favorite Marvel characters, particularly Spider-Ham.

Thanks! One of my goals is to write and draw a Spider-Ham story, I don't even care if it's just as a crappy back-up story for a book no one will read like Speedball #6 or Brother Voodoo #5! And me, I'm very much a Marvel guy, but there's plenty about DC that I love and I'd be up for doing cards for those guys if the opportunity arose. I'd be all up in doing Watchmen for sure, certainly some Batman in there, gotta have my Solomon Grundy, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man, but for sure, a long forgotten character from DC that was more in the humor line than anything, 'Mazing Man. My favorite book. I'd kill to draw that one.

thefremen In reply to JayFosgitt [2008-09-05 05:51:34 +0000 UTC]
Solomon Grundy, born on a monday. You know, he should be in a film just because he's the only character where the creation story would be very simple and nobody could complain about Hollywood getting it wrong!
Too bad you just don't have the time and resources to just go and draw a fan-comic of spider-ham.
DC brought back Ambush Bug (YEAH! I was glad to see him after 52) so 'Mazing Man has a pretty good chance. Frank Miller likes the character so who knows, maybe there's going to be a Legendary Films version of 'Mazing Man in the future. (Madness? THIS IS QUEENS!)

JayFosgitt In reply to thefremen [2008-09-05 12:19:41 +0000 UTC]
Oh man, if Miller made a film of 'Mazing Man, it'd be all black and white except for the yellow of 'Maze's hemlet and cape, all digital backgrounds, and Samuel L. Jackson would be playing Denton!
Hadn't heard that Ambush Bug was back. Is Giffen still writing it? I only liked Ambush bug marginally, because I felt like he was a rip-off of a far superior character, Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot (amongst my top three favorites comic book characters ever).

thefremen In reply to JayFosgitt [2008-09-07 08:59:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Giffen is writing it (and doing pencils too, I believe) and in this humble fan's opinion it's been pretty good, certainly a welcome relief from the DC universe's string of one exhausting huge crossover event after another.
What you just said about Frank Miller makes me worried about the Watchmen movie again...

JayFosgitt In reply to thefremen [2008-09-07 18:16:51 +0000 UTC]
I actually have full confidence in Watchmen. Everything I've researched on the film suggests Snyder is adhering religiously to the source material. As for the costumes, I'm with Dave Gibbons in understanding why Silk Spectre and Nite Owl's costumes differ slightly from the book and have a Schumacher-esque to them. Watchmen the book shed light on the goofy comic book conventions of superhero costumes, and Watchmen the movie will shed light on the far goofier comic book movie conventions of superhero costumes, such as built in nipples and lots of shiny vinyl and rubber. I think it will translate wonderfully. And I'm thrilled with the relatively unknown cast they chose, and the brilliant move of casting Jackie Earl Haley as Rorchach. I grew up with his work (he's probably not even eight years older than me) and felt he earned this role after years of obscurity.
But all I can say is that Eisner gave Miller his blessing to make The Spirit before he died. I assumed Miller would be as true as possible to the source material. Obviously the previews have shown otherwise. So Eisner pretty much did it to himself in trusting the otherwise brilliant Frank Miller. But on the upswing, with Miller's Sin City, at least we'll get our Sin City II a few years before Rodriguez actually directs it!

I saw a preview of the Max Payne movie the other day, until half way through I thought it was a new trailer for The Spirit.
Wow. You've really done your homework on Watchmen: The Film.
So here's something interesting: I was watching Duck Dodgers in the 24 and a half Century on Boomarang with my daughter, and Megadeth popped in and blew away Marvin in an episode that could have easily been a Metapocolypse crossover if you squinted really hard. Between that and the Green Lantern episode I think it was pretty good. IDK, for some reason I imagine you are the person they had in mind when they came up with Boomarang. It's interesting to watch cartoons I can hardly remember like Huckleberry Hound.
I completely forgot there was a Jetsons spinoff where Astro solved space crime and bumped into Space Ghost every once in a while.
