Hey everyone! I wanted to work on Ben's character a bit today so I drew a couple of sketches and a sort of brief little description about him (below) plus some notes and things I'm pondering. I think I'm really starting to understand him a bit more. I did a sketch of him in his briefs just so I could get a feel for what his body looks like. I need some practice with his legs, but I think overall it looks okay. Then there's a sketch of him when he was younger, probably around 11? And a couple sketches from a short story (more about that below) where he's having a lunch conversation with his friend Alexis. I don't know much about her yet, I may tweak her design a little later. Anyway, hope you enjoy this.

About Ben Hopper:

Ben moved to Vincent's town with his family only a couple of years ago. When Ben was younger, his sleepy eyes, buck teeth and lanky tall stature made him a very awkward pre teen. He was never considered particularly 'cool' or 'popular' at his previous school. He was also fairly quiet which didn't really help the situation. As such, Ben mostly kept to himself. He always had an interest in sports, so when he transferred schools he tried out for a few different teams. He was a good addition to the basketball and lacrosse teams, and he enjoyed playing them, but with sports came a bit of popularity. The more active he became, the more his body filled out and the students at his new school took notice of his attractiveness. But the new found fame was something Ben hadn't anticipated and didn't quite know how to deal with. Popular students tend to rally around him, invite him to parties but not many actually share his interests. So he plays along, hangs out, attends the parties but always still keeping to himself, never really feeling like he's part of the group. Inside he's still the quiet awkward rabbit he's always been. Fortunately Ben has always been very easy going so he doesn't really sweat it. He very rarely gets excited or angry.

Ben Notes:

Ben is about 17 and a half years old, pretty tall; about 6' 3”

He does have a couple of friends he likes hanging out with regularly but I have yet to work them out or design them.

I feel like Ben has one or two kinds of strange specific interests like he loves model trains or is crazy about Neil Diamond or something like that, but I don't know yet what those are.

I'm not sure if Ben's interest in chubby boys is something new, or if he has always preferred that body type. He's young and still trying things out and making new discoveries I suspect.

Ben is fairly quiet as mentioned before, but he isn't necessarily shy. He just doesn't really say much; like Maddie said before: he's not exactly deep. Intelligence-wise, Ben falls right in the middle of the road. He's not super smart, he's also not dumb. He's just so average it hurts, haha.

Ben has at least one sibling (little brother named Stephen or 'Stevie”). He may have more siblings (which would make sense since he's a rabbit, haha) but if he does, Ben is definitely the eldest.

Below is a short story I wrote this morning just for fun while I try to figure out Ben's character more. I just wanted to practice writing about him and include one of his friends since I haven't really explored them at all yet. It takes place probably about 4 days before Ben talked to Vincent (the cupcake incident, haha). Anyway, I hope you like it.

Ben sat alone at the lunch table that he and his friends usually occupied. He was the only one of them who'd brought a bag lunch from home which meant he didn't have to wait in line like the rest of them. He unrolled the top of the bag and dumped the contents onto the table top, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with the crusts cut off rolled out followed by a package of pastries and a small bottle of chocolate almond milk. He let out a small sigh, realizing he'd accidentally grabbed his little brother Stevie's lunch again. He was hoping for something a little more substantial that included vegetables. Stevie ate almost exclusively sugar, he imagined for a moment Stevie's disappointment over at the middle school across town realizing he had Ben's boring lunch.

He looked out across the lunch room as he tore into the sweet sandwich. Students were noisily shuffling in all directions holding bags and lunch trays. He scanned the crowd for something black and white... specifically a fluffy tail... the mysterious young skunk who'd recently become the object of his affection from afar. He spotted the skunk making his way to his friend's table, holding his lunch tray close to his chest, his round belly poking out under it. Ben didn't yet know his name... hadn't worked up the courage to talk to him yet.

“Hi, Ben.” Alexis; a feline friend of his placed her lunch tray on the table. “PB&J-in' it up today, huh?”

Ben just shrugged. Alexis brushed her tail to the side and sat in the chair beside him.

“Hey...” Ben pondered through a mouthful of sticky peanut butter. “Do you know who that skunk is?”

Alexis peered up from the carton she was having trouble opening and turned her attention to the direction that Ben was pointing.

"Who, Vincent?” She asked.

Ben shrugged again.

“Kinda pudgy, red shirt?” She asked, finally popping the carton open with a huff.

“Yeah... What'dya know about 'im?”

“Uh...” Alexis pondered for a moment. She'd been attending school with Vincent since they were little so she knew a fair amount about him although they weren't really friends. “He's like my age I think... likes to draw. Oh! He likes boys...” she nudged Ben's arm.

“He does?”

Alexis raised a brow “Is the crop top not making that at least a little bit obvious?”

Ben just shrugged again. “Anybody can wear a crop top.” He said with a little laugh.

The cat rested her chin on her palm as she stared off at Vincent and twirled her cafeteria spaghetti onto her fork. “He used to be such a little porker when we were kids. He's thinned out a bunch, but that big belly's just not going away.”

“I kinda like it.” Ben said so matter-of-factly that Alexis couldn't help but laugh... well, more like a snort but the sentiment was the same.

“Do you... like him?” Alexis asked once the amusement of the situation had passed.

“Dunno... maybe. I Haven't really talked to him... but he's cute... ya know?” Ben looked down at his sandwich.

“You know that is adorable right?” Alexis purred, a grin growing wide across her face. Ben made a move to shrug but she grabbed his shoulder “If you just shrug again, I swear...” Ben smirked. “I'm sure he isn't dating anyone... as long as I've known him, I can't remember Vincent ever dating someone... you should talk to him.”

“Heh... I wouldn't even know what to say to him.” Ben shook his head, wondering why he'd even brought this up to Alexis... he was going away to London in less than a week and no one even knew it. Still, this sudden skunk crush had him feeling a little overwhelmed... like his feelings were too much water spilling out from a jar and he needed to admit it to someone... anyone really.

“He likes food. Just like, bring him some candy or doughnuts or somethin'... an' ask him out.”

Just then Ben's other friends Reece, Anton and Dave sat down at the table. Neither Ben nor Alexis mentioned to them what they had been talking about.
