Description
**Thank you all so much for the DD =gurugu-mawaru & ^kkart . I appreciate you both so much. I would like to thank you all in advance for theJust got home from my really cool trip to Austin. The main purpose of the trip was to see these guys. They are Mexican Free-Tail bats. This is the location of the largest urban bat colony in North America. We were there really early to make sure we got a great spot. There is a pier stationed for people to sit on the edge of the river and just watch them emerge from their roost. Totally got the best spot on the pier. We even had our feet dangling in the water and watched turtles eat and had fish nibbling my toes.
Just so everyone knows, bats are amazing and very necessary creatures. I would really hate to think anyone would want to eradicate these guys or view them in a negative way, but just in case you do, here is a link for everyone to get more information on bat conservation and this bat colony in particular. Enjoy. [link]
This is the shot I wanted. I wanted the bats with the sunset behind them. I can't even begin to explain how amazing it was to see about 1.5 million bats, fly off into the night to go to work. I'll probably post a shot or two showing them flying off in the distance so you can get an idea of how many there were. Best experience ever! As far as editing, I cropped and adjusted levels a TINY bit. Other than that, this was the gorgeous scene. I'm so happy about this shot.
Prints can be bought at Redbubble. Here is the link. Thank you. [link] If you would prefer to buy it privately, note me.

Well done Jen! You got what you wanted and it makes a lovely shot! I went bat hunting with my son a few days ago, and we saw lots of bats, but mostly as individuals, pairs and at one point three together! Wow! lol. On the other hand, we were just a few feet from them and they were flying right at our faces. It was beautiful, and Joe was thrilled! We also spotted a crayfish crawling around in a collapsed culvert while we were waiting for the bats lol.

We actually had planned on going back on Sat. and standing on the bridge so they would fly right past us and we could get the view from the other side, but we ended up staying to late at the capital building so we didn't make it on time. It was so cool and I would love to go again.

Then you'd never go because you'd always think of going another time, and that other time would never happen

It's not so much about forgetting, it's just when you live somewhere with some great tourist attraction or whatever, it's surprising how difficult it is to make the time to see it. I suppose because when you're at home you're not on holiday, which is when you'd go to see it. When you're on holiday you tend to go away, and then you don't get to see the things that are closer to home.

Exactly that. I live near Bath, and was born there and grew up there. I think I've been to the Roman Baths maybe twice in my life for the tour. Mind you, it is expensive to go in there!

now that is a unique shot this looks kinda surreal to me, it's so wonderful
I've seen a swarm of bats suddenly fly out of a cave in a hill once, but there weren't as many as these. congrats on getting the shot you wanted

I really wanted this and one a little closer, but I didn't get it. I'm cool with this though. I am more than thankful. Can you readily see they are bats when you look at the photo? After reading the title?

Actually I didn't read the title until after seeing the image, and I was like hmm these don't look like birds, kinda like...ohh these must be the bats Some of the bats' wings are really clear, so yeah I can tell there are bats

jayshree In reply to HA91 [2009-08-10 06:57:00 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, thats why I titled it that way because I figured people are going to think they're birds. I had a few stragglers fly right above my head. Talk about trying to catch those guys in mid flight. They move around so much.

I've never seen birds fly in a formation like that, so I think people should be able to identify that these are bats And oh yeah, they do not stay still at all, and their flight path is waggly compared to a bird's, so it's really hard to capture them (I tried once...the only thing I got away with was a bat swooping right onto my head and then flying away
I was like 8 and really sad

I know someone who lives in Austin and she never mentioned the giant bat colony. If she had I might have propositioned her for a visit, just to see the bats.
That was a wonderful photo, really!
