How were you able to add a gradient to the background when the drawing was originally traditional? Since the background and the characters are on the same layer with scanned drawings.

I added a solid color fill layer with a color gradient, then used the bucket with black paint on it. I then colored around both figures with white paint. The gradient isn't really on the background, it's around the drawing.

Thank you. I'm going to dedicate 2016 to becoming as good an artist as I can. I have spent the last month gathering materials and drafting an art course for myself. I hope I may be able to teach that same course to other afterwards.
