Description My part for yet another art trade with *Dahdtoudi . Presenting...the Kazegake spending family time with his lovely wife Tausha and their firstborn son Shin (is that right? Man, I always seem to forget).

I won't say anything about the hands (as I'm not good at drawing them) but I think I did a crappy job with the colouring. Yeah, I know, Gaara's love kanji sign is missing but I don't care so please don't nag me about it.

So I hope you like *Dahdtoudi

In return she drew me this super cute pic of Rock Lee with my OC Izanami [link]

Wow -- I love that lawn! Look at those straight rows of grass. Whoever cuts that sucker is friggin' magic with a mower.

Anyway, nice image. Very colorful.

You might want to up your resolution in the future -- you have a heavy jaggie problem on your black linework. 300 dpi at the very least (though 400 and up is delicious), and then when you reduce it to 72 or 75 later, the jaggies won't be as apparent.

And you have that nice grass, but the shadow cast by the figures ignores its texture. Perhaps use the eraser with the same grass brush to break up the starkness of the shadow edge? I did that a little with the shadow in this image -- [link] . I also used the eraser on the character itself, to make it seem like the grass was coming up around its feet (I should've done more, but there was already a bunch of experimentation in that image). That way it becomes more part of the image, and less resting atop it, like a sticker on a photo.

But anyway, nice, colorful, happy piece.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still trying to figure out PhotoShop since I'm new at it, so that's why my lineart and everything else is craptastic.

I wouldn't say craptastic -- I've seen craptastic on dA -- you're better than that.

But just the whole raising your DPI bit will give you some dramatic improvement in your linework. It'll look super smooth, even on the pencil setting -- [link] -- like so.

Anyway, just keep at it. I assume you're using a tablet?

Not really. I enhance the lineart using the poster edges, guess that's why the lines are edgy and thick.

Ah, I see now. Is this mouse drawn, or scanned and then enhanced? Yeah, poster edges might do that.

Hand drawn and scanned, and then enhanced, yes. I prefer to draw free-handed on paper rather draw on the computer, don't know why I just like it that way.

How do you enhance lineart without making it too edgy and thick?

It's been a while... I'd have to think about that one. Is this inked artwork, or just pencil? Either way, I'd scan the linework in at least 600 dpi to start. After that, use brightness contrast to clear it up.

You should check out this guy's tutorial -- [link] -- he goes into what he does, and it seems to come up with some good results, plus he discusses how to go about all this without a tablet.

And I agree -- if you don't have a tablet, drawing on the computer isn't impossible, but it can be a pain.
