When I began this initial piece, it was built with a guideline based on the rule of thirds. The image is aligned to create tension at the power point, being the sharks open mouth. My intention was to use the body the shark to help guide the viewers eyes to our main focal point, the seal. This was done by literally drawing a straight line from the sharks midsection to the apex point, the nose. I think cropping the image would make it visually more stunning initially, but the viewer might miss the build up of the pieces true power. I also added my signature at the start of this point, even though it is somewhat hidden. I definitely will explore your suggestions with this piece and others moving forward, perhaps using different rules and guidelines to take advantage of making my art more visually dramatic. Now your automatic response is to laugh at this because it's a stark opposite of what we are meant to expect from nature. But it actually makes a valid point, we have all been the shark and seal at some point in our lives. Predator and Prey, however the predator does not always win over the prey and the prey doesn't always lose. In order to survive one must rely on their wit as well as their physical abilities, you cannot simply be strong you must know how to use your strength and as we can see here the shark hasn't got a bloody clue and the seal not only knows how to use it's own strength but knows the shark doesn't. Thus we should aspire to be like the seal, not only know how to use our own strengths but also the predators to our advantage.

This piece is completely amazing. I had difficulty believing it was done traditionally. How long did this take you to complete?

Usually I focus on something for 30 days off and on... I paint traditional then use tools to remove highlights and shadows from the brush strokes after scan. From there its retouching(photoshop)... So its really mixed media. I'm changing my categories to reflect that, but I may just start putting digital and it becomes somewhat confusing.
