Twin Tails of Vengeance
Chap5 Facing My Fears
“Sonic….” There was total silence. “Sonic?”
Then a loud clang. “Sonic?!!” There was a yell of anger and sounds of combat rang all around.
Voices and crashes and a scream. One of the figures had fallen and the antagonist was approaching… must hide must hide! Huddled up behind boxes. Too weak… and losing blood fast….
“please don’t let him find me, please don’t let him find me!”
Things began exploding and dust flew into the eyes. When it settled in plain sight inches away stood a black and red hedgehog with crimson staining his body.
“AAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!” That gut wrenching scream.
Tails’ eyes snapped open as he shot up in fright sweat dripped from his face. His head spun and he felt hot and sluggish. He looked over at Mori And Ragnarok sleeping on a park bench while Tails leaned against a wall. He put his hand to his face and moaned.
Why was he having nightmares about Shadow? That hedgehog had been way for years. Not that he cared. Shadow was just one more thing to worry about. That black creature had scared the living daylights out of him since so many encounters in the past.
Those Burning red eyes that were filled with anger and power. It was those same eyes that he had stared into as he had fought to protect his love from Shadow’s wrath. Shadow had pulled no punches and had beaten Tails miserably.
Part of Tails’ anger and also fear of Shadow had stemmed from that particular encounter and many more. Tails spit at his weakness. Every time he thought back on the memory he wished he could’ve fought harder. Just another burden of regret he had to carry now. And it added to his anxiety of how unsteady he felt in this city.
Time to move on he thought. He woke the two children and pondered his next move. It suddenly crossed his mind he’d been thinking of Sonic way more then he had before he started his plot as well. But the thoughts were no longer just sad but… angry as well. Tails didn’t know hot to interpret that.
He shook his head. The kids rubbed their eyes and followed Tails who was feeling very vulnerable.
Back along ways away from the fox a red pick up truck meandered down a country road with a rabbit and a cyborg panther as it’s passengers.
Celenie felt her mind wandering as she tried to keep her thoughts on driving. She glanced over at Cream next to her who was slouched in her seat head leaning against the window in a deep slumber.
It gave her some comfort knowing the rabbit felt safe driving with her even though she was a cyborg. Maybe they could become friends.
After hours of silence they came to the forest of Knothole. The truck rattled and obviously wasn’t meant for driving along forest floors.
“Cream, you do know where knothole is right?”
Cream sat up and yawned as she rubbed her eyes.
“…Huh?” She asked dazed.
“Where is Knothole? I’ve followed your directions but I don’t see Knothole anywhere Like Tails said.”
“Oh, it’s hard to find even if you do know where it is.” Cream replied. “Tails told me it’s hidden because it was a hideout from back when Tails and Sonic and everyone else hid as they planned their raid against Dr. Robotnik.
To make a long story short they found the village and entered on to ‘Freedom Fighter territory‘.
They decided to abandon the car and continue on foot. Since Dr. Robotnik was no longer in power they were to worried about the discovery of Knothole as they had in the past.
The two entered the forest quietly not knowing what to expect. They trees and bushes were few at first but eventually the girls were surrounded by greenery on all sides.
Eventually a few small huts of the village’s occupants could just barely be seen through all the trees and bushes. They seemed to be there.
As Cream and Celenie proceeded movement off to the left caught Cream’s eye.
Suddenly another rabbit erupted from the bushes at them. The two girls instantly discovered she was a cyborg. She produced a gun from her robotic arm and there was a humming sound as she charged it and pointed it at them. Seems Knothole had been taken over before they had arrived…
Shadow cursed under his breath as he pushed his motorcycle to a gas station. He wasn’t sure how to get the gas though and only knew that this place gave out fuel.
He stood at the cycle’s side as he brought it forward over to one of the pumps at the station. He looked quizzically at the pump unsure of how to use it.
He looked over at a giraffe using the pump next to him. Shadow took in a deep breath, he hated asking for help.
“Could you please help me with this thing?” He asked polity as he could.
The giraffe took one look at the big gun in the hedgehog’s hand and ran off screaming.
Shadow raised an eyebrow and then looked down at his hand. Oh, he’d forgotten he was holding it all this time. His hands were all to accustomed holding onto tools of destruction and firearms especially.
Shadow looked at the fueling hose and took it out of it’s holder. The whole place smelled like gas which made him want to gag. Shadow turned to face the cycle and looked for the refueling spot.
He saw a shiny hatch so he went over and lifted it up. He stuck the hose into the hatch and waited.
After nothing happened he got impatient and looked over at the screen on the pump which currently displayed nothing. He balled his free hand into a fist and gave the machine a good thwack.
The thing swayed on it’s base but steadied and remained the same.
Shadow growled. And then looked over his shoulder and saw a human mother and child refueling their van.
The mother was affectionately holding her daughter’s hand while with her free hand she reached into her pocket and pulled out some coins and inserted them into a slot on the machine. After a clinking sound the machine started working and the mother withdrew the hose and inserted the nozzle into the her vehicle’s gas tank.
“So that’s how it’s done then.” Shadow thought to himself. Except he had no money. He knew he’d have to ask. He hated needing help. He took in a deep breath and exhaled it. He crouched down and tried to hide the HK416 behind the gas pump. Then approached the two.
“Good Evening ma’am.” Shadow said again trying to be polite as possible. It felt strange, and some what shameful asking the race so long ago he had tried to destroy. Now he needed favors from them. Images flooded into his memory. He shook his head trying to push them out. “Could you please spare me some coins? I need fuel for my vehicle.”
They mother and child looked over at him. None of them said anything and Shadow’s heart sank. What if they knew who he was and what he had done? He didn’t want them alerting G.U.N.
“Why certainly,” The lady said kindly and dug into her pocket again and handed a few coins toShadow. “good luck.”
“Thank you.” Shadow said and turned went back to his bike. But over his shoulder he heard them talking.
“Mommy, that was Shadow!” The little child said excitedly.
“Now dearie, how could that be Shadow? You know Shadow is evil and destructive and that hedgehog was very polite.”
Shadow froze, and cast a sad glance over his shoulder at the mother… then continued walking…
Tails and the kids were walking down the street and Tails’ mind seemed to be standing still floating in nothingness. He kept forgetting what he was doing. He saw something up ahead that caught his eyes.
A shooting gallery. Better yet it was offering a prize money.
Tails figured even with the little ammunition he still had he should be good enough to win.
He walked over to the gallery. There was already a rhino with a old M1 rifle plugging away at the targets with a loud bang every couple seconds.
Tails checked his guns as he waited for the current gunner to finish. Tails took out Rage Drive’s ammo magazine and emptied the shells into his hand. He put the magazine back into the pistol and then withdrew Dark Angel. Next he took out it’s magazine as he had with Rage Drive and put the bullets from the previous gun and loaded them into Dark Angel so now it was fully loaded. Tails looked over his shoulder and watched the rhino pack up his guns in a case, wave to someone near the range and walk away.
Tails cocked the gun and strode over to the gallery. Except now there was a group of various animals standing there all talking.
“Excuse me, I’m up next.” Tails said walking up to them, none of them even spared him a glance. “Excuse me…” Still no one spoke. Tails was beginning to grow very annoyed. “Hello? There’s going to be some shooting going on here!” Still he was ignored. Tails saw red.
“Unless you want your freakin head blown off!!! I’d suggest you get out of my way!!!!” Tails yelled at the clueless group.
They all gave him a look and then when they caught glance of his side arm they all backed off and dispersed.
“You sure yell loud Daddy.” Ragnarok said nodding. Mori was beginning to find that people here were very… hard. Different from her family.
The manager who had a extremely bored look, his face resting on his arm, half closed eyes, chewing on a piece of beef jerky, pulled a lever and the far end of the gallery facing Tails. On that end new targets folded upwards from the floor.
“Yes, thanks.” Tails said to Ragnarok stepping up to the gallery. He trained the gun straight ahead and brought his eye level with the sights.
He concentrated on the red bull’s eye many feet away. It suddenly seemed farther away then he thought it was. But he had to hit or he was wasting his ammunition especially since he needed the money from this. But he hadn’t practiced marksmanship nuch.
“Come on, I can do this, I’ am not weak.”
Tails focused and squeezed the trigger.
BANG!!!
Not quite, he’d hit a bit off by a few inches.
Tails raised the gun a second time and took aim. Boy, his hands seemed unsteady. Tails didn’t know why he could hardly get a sound shot off.
He focused on the dot. Fired a second time. Still not a bull’s eye.
“Sir,” Tails asked looking over at the manager. “How much will I be paid for my marks?”
“Five mobiums per bull’s eye.” The man said speaking around the jerky in his mouth. “But… if you’re going to be doing this for money, then you’re going to have to better then that.” The man said. He pulled down another lever and the conveyer belt that the targets were on began to spinning quite fast. “Hit ‘em all and you win 80 mobiums.” The manager said perking up a bit.
“Great, just peachy keen.” Tails growled. He Swung Dark Angel into action.
“You can do it Tails!” Mori said smiling at him.
“Go Daddy!” Ragnarok cheered.
Tails gave them a smile over his shoulder. Then he returned his attention to the challenge before him. Time to get serious…
The belt that the targets were one was rotating at an considerably fast rate. But Tails had seen things like this before. The trick was that since the targets were moving at a speed so that when you try to hit them they’re already off sight. The secret was to aim in the direction they are moving in.
Tails took aim, he trained dark Angel just a centimeter in the path of the target coming.
BANG!!! A direct hit! Tails felt himself getting excited.
BANG!!!
BANG!!! The gun shook in his hands with a satisfying kick.
BANG!!! Tails was a better shot then he gave himself credit for!
Ragnarok standing behind him was watching with keen eyes at every detail of this spectacle:
Daddy Always gripped the noisy thing he had with both hands, he always pointed it steadily before making it get loud. Next he noticed the loud bright flash of yellow orange that erupted from the end of the barrel. Then the top would instantly slid back the shoot back into it’s normal state. After that a small, hallow, light bronze cylinder would eject out of the top and land with a quiet clink.
Ragnarok with his childish mind didn’t quite understand a gun’s entire purpose or scale of damage. But he knew it was something that was dangerous at the least.
His brain absorbed every small detail on Dark Angel’s design and performance and stashed it away for later.
“That’s a very interesting thing you have Daddy…” His father seemed quite skilled.
Tails exhaled a deep sigh of relief as the gun smoke cleared. All the targets lay in ruin.
Now Tails finally had the money he needed to buy hopefully as much ammunition as he needed and then some.
“Nice shootin,” The manager said giving a approving nod to the fox. “Guess you win the money fair and square.” He reached down and tossed Tails the a bag and money with a flick of the wrist.
Tails reached up and caught the small pouch in both hands. It felt heavy and useful in his hands. He nodded his thanks and turned to leave.
“Hey, hold on a second,” The man said. He reached inside and around some clutter around where he had been sitting. “It’s nothing much but I think you deserve a little something … extra. He reached back up and threw something long thin and heavy to Tails. It was quite heavy but not ridiculously so. Wait… was this what he thought it was?
Back in Knothole Cream and Celenie stood still as the cyborg rabbit held up her robotic arm that had a lethal laser built into it. The laser made a low hum sound as the rabbit aimed at them.
Cream didn’t know who this person was or what to do. If only Tails was here she thought. But the person was a female rabbit.
Celenie was equally afraid.
“Grave Diggers?” She said fearfully and taking a step backwards in a familiar fear.
“What?” Cream tried to ask.
“Who are you?!” The cyborg rabbit demanded. She spoke in a strong southern accent. “Spies for Robotnik aren’tcha?”
“No please, we’re not that at all. We -we…” She was so scared she couldn’t remember why they were here.
“Grave Diggers…” Celenie stuttered again in a scared whisper.
“Call me a gravy dipper will ya?!” the rabbit said hearing Celenie wrong. She pointed the laser at the panther next.
“No wait!!” Cream pleaded and found the laser pointing back at her. Fear rose inside her again.
“Please, listen to me. We were sent by Tails, he-”
“Tails?!!” The other rabbit said shocked. She immediately disarmed the weapon and now looked worried. “Tails? What about him? Is he alright? We haven’t heard from the lil’ kit in ages!” She said speaking very quickly. “How is he? Is he alright?” Suddenly she slowed down.
“oh, I’m sorry. How very rude of me. My name is Bunny Rabbot. I’m a Knothole freedom Fighter. Tails and I go way back.” She suddenly grew quiet. “…We haven’t heard from him since Sonic died… Poor kid was crushed….”
“I’m Cream, nice to meet you Bunny. And this with me is Celenie.”
Bunny gave a nod and a smile.
“As for Tails, well….” Cream looked away for a second. “Well… he’s… very distant I’d say.”
“You could say that again.” Bunny interjected. “He’s been living away from us all and never even attempted to contact us at all.”
“Yes… he also looked …. sofull of agony and…” Cream’s voice dropped to whisper. “…I think he’s lost the will to live…”
Shadow once again was roaring along the street on his motorcycle. Now it was refilled and ready to go. He was wondering where to go for answers and who might know anything about curse removal.
Suddenly his thoughts began drifting. To a girl he used to know.
Maria… that had been her name. She was so young, yet so knowing, so compassionate, so innocent… like a saint. She’d even died trying to do good.
Saint Maria…
It stuck in Shadow’s head.
Saint Maria.
Shadow swerved to bike to a stop. He looked at the bike and a smile appeared on his face.
“Look sharp enough for you?” The manager asked Tails.
The fox was goggling over what he was holding in his hands.
“A-a sword?!” Tails asked.
“Yeah… it’s very nice sword too.” The manager said. “Give it to the kid why don’t you.”
“Ohh, can I have it Daddy? Please? Please?” Ragnarok pleaded.
“No! Absolutely not!” Tails said. “No swords!”
Ragnarok crossed his arms and pouted.
“Why not? You got two pistols, the girl’s got a crossbow, and yet the kid’s got nothing. Let him have the sword man.” The manager said.
“NO,” Tails said sternly. “I’m only taking them to home where they’ll be safe. We don’t need to be armed to the teeth for that.” Tails put Dark Angel back in the holster and picked up the sword in one hand and took his 80 mobiums in his other hand.
Tails thanked the man for the winnings and left with the children.
“But Daddy…” Ragnarok complained” Why can’t I have a sword?”
“Because, it’s not a toy, Ragnarok.” Tails stated.
“But Judgment Day looks so cool.”
Tails turned around with a bewildered look.
“What? What are you talking about?”
“That’s the sword’s name Daddy.”
“Huh? How do you know that?”
“It’s right on the shiny part.”
Tails had no idea how to react. But he took the weapon’s handle and slide it out just a bit.
Sure enough there at the base of the blade engraved in jet black lettering was the words:
‘Judgment Day’
Tails stared at the sword in stark shock. He heard Ragnarok’s childish laughter as he continued to stare. How did Ragnarok know it’s name? Tails slid the sword back into it’s sheath and turned around.
“Tell you what Ragnarok,” Tails said.
The child stopped laughing and turned to face Tails with interest.
“Yes, daddy?”
“Go into the store over there,” Tails said pointing to the gun store he’d been in earlier. Obviously he couldn’t go back in there with the weird owner. “Go in there and ask for 60 45. Caliber bullets and automatic pistol accessories and equipment.” Tails said tossing Ragnarok the bag of mobiums. “Can you remember all that?”
“Yep Daddy. I got it all right in here.” He said tapping his forehead.
“Good, now treat the man nicely.”
“Okay, but just one thing daddy. Can I have the sword when I come back?”
Tails groaned. The kid was obsessed. Mori was perfectly content. “I’ll think about it.” Tails said.
Ragnarok smiled and walked inside. He was very small and the store was pretty big to him. Though in reality was only one room.
He walked up to the desk. It was taller then three of him standing on the other’s head.
“Hello? He asked.
“What is it.” The pig grumpily asked leaning over the counter.
Ragnarok heard the voice but couldn’t see the man since he was so short. He jumped up into the air and landed perfectly on the counter on both feet.
“Hiya!” He said smiling as if all children jumped like that. The pig raised an eyebrow.
“Well hello there.” Curious at the fact that the kid could jump like an Olympic performer and what this tiny tot could possibly be doing at a gun store without an adult. “Well just what can I do for you?” He asked.
“Well let’s see…” Ragnarok said looking off into space as he rubbed his chin recalling Daddy’s list. “Well my Daddy asked for 60 rounds of… uh… 45. Caliber bullets, and automatic pistol accessories and equipment. Hey, I remembered it all! Yay!!!”
He did a little dance on the counter.
The owner looked at the animal wondering who he belonged to with an eyebrow still raised.
“aAren’t you going to get Daddy’s stuff?” Ragnarok asked after he was done dancing.
The pig turned around and began rummaging through the shelves behind him and place the contents on the counter at Ragnarok’s feet. Down to the last order.
“Satisfied?” the pig asked.
“Yep!”
“Good, then pay up.” The owner grouchily said.
“Okay.” Ragnarok tossed the bag of winnings to the owner he opened it and began counting out the mobiums.
“Kid, where’s your parents?”
“Oh, my daddy? He said not to ask me or he’d tear your head off.” Ragnarok replied.
The owner frowned. “Just Get out, and take this with you.” He grabbed the knife Tails had thrown into his counter earlier and hurled it out the door.
Tails saw the knife fly right past him and was about to rush in when Ragnarok came bouncing out the door smiling.
“Just for you Daddy!” He said smiling and handing everything to Tails.
“Uh, thanks,” Tails said. Surprised and impressed at the child’s keen memory. “Did he ask you anything?” Tails asked.
“I just told him what you told me to say if he asked about me.” Tails smiled at the response.
Later they were resting at an hotel. Tails put the two kids on the bed and the two fell into sleep instantly. Tails sat across the bedroom from them. He reloaded them both to their full capacity and using the new materials he’d obtained he altered them both. Rage Drive now had some more tranquilizing needles and normal rounds too. Dark Angel on the other hand was going to live up to it’s name. Tails had spent the most time working on that one. Now it had normal rounds and Tails also designed some special armor piercing rounds. If there was one thing Tails had learned from his fight with Metal Sonic it was that even though every one has their weak points it’s sometimes best to just blast through their defenses any way you can.
Tails yawned and decided it was time to call it a night. He cleared everything off the small table he was working on and cocked the guns and held them up admiring them. He’d designed them himself… They were his black beauties.
He stared at them as he thought that no one had ever expected to see him wielding firearms ever. He had installed guns on the Tornado was this honestly any different?
Tails walked over to one of the hotel’s windows in his room. He lifted the shade covering the window. The night was full of neon bright and he could faintly hear the honking and other hundreds of noises coming from down below.
This city… he thought of all the people living here. They all had dreams of winning the slots and going home rich, this place was fueled by the desire for money. Some people like him and the kids just wanted to get through. But others….
Tails closed the window and sat down on a bed and laid back giving a long sigh.
He noticed Judgment Day laying on the table ahead of him. That weird thing certainly was an odd blade. Maybe he should get someone to look at it. He wondered if he could get it appraised or something. He glanced over at an clock on a nightstand next to the bed.
9:47 PM
Hmm, it wasn’t quite as late as it felt. Well then, there was still the problem of who would watch the kids.
He sat up and belted on his holsters and slid Dark Angel and Rage Drive into them. He fastened his jacket over them and took up the sword. He crept quietly down the stairs and went over to the manager’s desk.
“Hey, um could you please watch the kids in my room? I got something I really got to take care of and I’ll be back soon.”
“What room?” The desk lady asked.
“167.” the fox responded.
“Will do.”
Tails stepped outside into the night air. He inhaled it deeply and then let it out.
He walked forward and immediately he felt light headed and a terrible pang of hunger in his stomach.
Tails realized he hadn’t slept since early in the morning and he’d burned so much energy in his match against Metal and wandering around this place. Tails knew he hadn’t eaten since… he didn’t know…
The pain was almost excruciating. He knew his friends would of always made sure he took care of himself… But since Sonic died….
BAH! Who cared! His friends hadn’t even come to look for him in since that hedgehog had fallen to his death!
He didn’t need any off them. He was stronger then they all thought! He would destroy the cyborgs with out anyone’s help!
And he would prove it to them.
He took in a deep breath. This place… he wanted to get out of it so bad. Tails walked through a small group of slot machines.
He passed them with out a care. But one of them caught his eye.
He turned to face a slots that bared a annoyingly exact resemblance to Dr. Robotnik complete with a bizarre smile.
It only managed to irritate Tails even more and he yelled as he punched the slot machine in the face cracking it in half. He ended up busting some other machines around him as well.
The fox stood there panting. Suddenly he felt a hard wonk on his head and he fell back wards and could’ve sworn he’d seen stars.
He rubbed his head as he sat up and gaped at what sat in his lap.
It was one of the chaos emeralds.
He goggled at it. It had literally just dropped out of nowhere and packed him on the head!
Honestly, what are the chances of- well who gives pink peach over the odds! He now had a Chaos Emerald within his possession!
Tails cautiously looked around and picked up the glittering gem and put it in his black jacket’s pocket and then set off. The emeralds had always been so sought after by everyone since they held such power. But no one would take this from Tails. not even Dr. Robotnik.
Suddenly he felt cold and his fur bristled.
Almost as if on que he heard a loud noise ahead. Tails tried to ignore his hunger and pressed himself to move on. He rounded a corner and froze in place at the sight before him…
He saw a silhouette against the neon lights of the numerous casinos. And memories, horrifying memories filled his mind. He could feel his fur standing on end.
As Tails trembled he stared straight into all the memories and he knew exactly who this person standing before him was. The one that had beaten him almost to the point of death, who had frayed his hero so many times, and responsible for so many deaths…
The figure slowly began to turn around. Tails felt fear paralyze him. And freeze him where he stood. His mind conjured up his nightmare.
“No…. No… Please don’t let him find me. Please don’t let him find me!”
The figure was now facing him, but the glare from all the lights was obscuring their face. But Tails knew who it was.
“Well hello, Tails…” The voice penetrated Tails’ mind as he stood still as stone. “You sure have changed. “Be a good fox and give me that emerald…” Shadow stepped closer towards to Tails and held out his hand. Tails felt his body shake as he looked down at his pocket. How did Shadow know it was there? “The emerald Tails…” Shadow said again.
Tails guessed Shadow probably would hesitate to kill him if he didn’t comply.
After all, after so much that happened in the past. Tails knew he couldn’t just cough up an emerald like this though. But this was Shadow who was threatening him! Not Rouge or Nack.
Tails was petrified. He didn’t know what to do. His trembling hand shakily began to reach for the emerald in his pocket. Shadow’s red eyes immediately looked towards the fox’s hand.
Tails knew he could always find other emeralds. But he wanted this one. It was his after all! He had found it himself!
Tails knew his was going to regret this. He slipped his hand into his pocket. But he knew he didn’t want to give it up. He was glad the kids weren’t here to see their father acting so weak.
Weak… weak… the word vibrated in Tails’ mind. The word he hated. The word he would never be again. Tails gritted his teeth as he slipped his hand into his pocket and wrapped his fingers around the emerald. And his hand brushed against Dark Angel’s cold metal surface. No more weakness.
Tail looked downwards and gritted his teeth together. No more weakness. He knew could almost feel Dark Angel whispering for use. Tails knew He had been hurt by Shadow in the past along with others. He hated it. Hated it. It was time for Shadow to pay…
Shadow still held out his hand looking at Tails. He had figured Tails was the one he had sensed to help him. The emerald would help him. He had thought Tails would of given in already though. But as he studied the fox closer he saw that his fear was giving way to determination. But Shadow needed that emerald. The burn of the curse mark upon his back reminded him of his need for the Chaos Emerald.
“May I have the gem now?” Shadow persisted.
Tails snapped his face back up glaring at Shadow. His features tensed in anger and determination.
“Go kiss Rough’s arse Shadow!!!”
Shadow eyes wide, took a step backwards in surprise. Tails continued to yell as his adrenaline coursed. “I’m sick of you. You think just because I’m young that I’m weak. WRONG!”
Shadow closed his eyes and smirked. He’d never seen Tails act this way before. He’d certainly changed. a lot. But it didn’t matter. Tails was just a boy. “Listen Tails.” Shadow began. “You’re to young, give me the emerald. Now.”
“There you go! You’re Just underestimating me!! like every one else!” Tails said now infuriated at Shadow.
Shadow was beginning to lose patience. “Look , I need that emerald more then you do.”
“NO! I found it. It’s mine!” Tails replied.
“Look fox, You could never over come me.”
“That’s just it, You’re all the same! You all try to bring me down!” Tails screamed angrily at Shadow. Who turned around and began walking away. Tails looked after him.
Shadow walked over to a black box with a red and black hedgehog face on it. How convenient it was here. He kicked the weapon container open and a samurai sword with a gleaming silver handle and black and gold handle clattered to the floor. Shadow smiled and slung his HK over his shoulder and picked up the blade and turned to face Tails
“I don’t intend to ask you again. Give me the emerald.” The black hedgehog pointed the sword’s blade at Tails.
“Suck lead Shadow. I‘m more lethal then I look.” Tails snapped.
He threw back his jacket’s side and swept out Dark Angel and Rage Drive with a loud click as he cocked them.
Shadow’s eyes widened as he stood there. But not from fear of being shot.
He was amazed at how much Tails had changed. It was such a far cry from the small kid he had attacked so long ago. He hadn’t imagined the fox wielding fire arms either.
“I warned you.” Shadow said in low tone as he poised his blade into a striking stance.
Tails stood his ground and trained his pistols on Shadow.
“I’ll admit I’m still afraid of you. I’ve always hide behind Sonic. But no more. I’m facing my fears. Starting with you.” Tails said glaring at Shadow.
Shadow listened. “Then prove it.” She said as he fired up his jet skates and flew at Tails.
The fox hardly had anytime to think as the black bullet shot at him. He rolled to the side and was missed. Tails kept rolling and tucked his feet under him and stood up.
He thrust his dual firearms straight and pulled the trigger of both guns.
BANG!!!! BANG!!!! BANG!!!! Their loud shots cracked the air and Tails found out that both the guns had a bigger recoil on both his hands. Too much in fact.
Shadow circled around as bullets pinged the wall next to his face. Shadow swerved on his skates and headed for Tails again, sword ready.
Tails’ arms hurt from both kickbacks of the guns. He tried firing again. Yellow light exploded from the muzzles of the guns. Shadow held out the blade and pumped his arm and spun the sword vertically blocking the bullets.
Tails gave a slight whimper as Shadow negated the shots. But most of Tails distress came from his aching arms. His arms couldn’t absorb both the guns recoiling at once. He would have to operate one for now. Shadow rushed at Tails still spinning the Samurai Blade.
Tails quickly holstered Rage Drive and leaped sideways and blasted a shot at the speeding black passing him. The result was blowing out a chunk of wall.
Tails landed and Shadow deactivated one skate turning on the dime and the shot back at Tails again.
The fox gripped the gun with both hands as he had at the shooting range and fired straight at Shadow. This time he absorbed the full recoil but Shadow swung the sword deflecting the shell into the wall.
Shadow smirked. “Useless.” shadow held the sword above his head and spun it around and then swung it down to his side. “care for a little fencing lesson?”
Shadow ran at Tails this time on foot. He raised the gleaming blade above his head and leaped into the air coming down on Tails.
Suddenly it dawned on Tails that once again he had thrown himself into a fight with a powerful adversary. The blade and Shadow rushed down.
First with metal Sonic and now Shadow. Both had been his enemy. Even Though Tails had managed to survive Metal Sonic, Shadow was a completely different matter.
He didn’t think he could out match Shadow.
Before Tails could think he saw thin silvery death slash him.
Suddenly Shadow saw more silver flash like solid light and he felt a jolt through his arms.
“What?” He questioned.
“Feeling innocent Shadow? I hope you are cause you’re about to be judged.” Tails held out Judgment Day which met Shadow’s Samurai Blade. He whipped the weapon out just in time to save himself. He’d forgotten it was with him. Tails pushed the hedgehog off him.
“Well, you’re just full of surprises aren’t you?” Shadow said. A small smile playing across his face.
Tails didn’t know how to respond to that but tensed his posture and prepared for what ever Shadow might throw at him.
They slowly began circling each other, swords raised.
“Well Shadow,” Tails began with a confident smirk on his face. “I don’t think we ever imagined the two of us clashing like this.”
“No, I don’t think we did.” Shadow said with the same expression.
The two ran at each other and their blades met in a flurry of sparks. Shadow quickly jumped back and swung his entire body striking at Tails’ head. The fox quickly jerked his head to the side avoiding lightening steel.
Tails wasn’t much of a swordsmen but he knew the basics from past experiences and Shadow obviously knew the ropes of it too.
The black hedgehog moved jumped backwards and curled into a spin dash and shot at Tails in a blur of black. He caught the fox in the chest knocking him backwards several feet.
Tails gagged from the impact as he slid. Shadow wasted no time as he landed still spinning and circled back around coming at Tails a second time.
Tails cleared his head and flipped back up and had barely anytime to think as he leaped above Shadow and kicked him the back of the head sending him sprawling forward.
Shadow quickly recovered and got to his feet and the two rushed at each other.
Tails whisked his own blade upwards and blocked Shadow’s blow. Tails made a quick vertical strike at Shadow who brought his sword up horizontally defending against the steel strike.
The fox and hedgehog both flipped backwards putting distance in between each other.
Tails landed and spread his legs apart gripping the handle with both hands. Shadow back flipped and landed on top of a car with his weapon held horizontally in one hand in front of him.
He changed his mind and then jumped on top of a short building. Shadow wrapped both his hands around the sword and leaped off the roof coming down on Tails gaining momentum all the while.
Tails gasped and raised the blade just in time and stopped Shadow’s maneuver. Except Shadow had built up so much momentum Tails was knocked down on his back.
With a quick flick of the blade’s tip Shadow whisked Judgment Day out of Tails’ grip.
Tails watched in disdain as the sword flipped through the air and Shadow caught it with a sweep of his hand.
“Nice sword. Where ever did you get it?” Shadow asked half taunting half actually wondering.
“It fell out of the sky just like my emerald.” Tails snapped back. The fox rolled over and when he was facing Shadow again his dual pistols blazing.
Shadow was surprised at the quick manuever and spun both Judgment Day and Samurai Blade blocking the barrage of gunfire.
Silence drifted and then was broken by the soft clinking of crumpled shells clinking to the ground after hitting the blades.
Shadow uncrossed the blades and held them pointing outwards stretching his arms out.
He ran at Tails who ran to the alleyway and Shadow pursued.
Tails ran and skid to a stop finding a dead end.
“Just my freaking luck.” He thought. Tails whirled around as he heard a terrible scraping sound. He turned around and caught the sight of Shadow running at him his swords scraping against the alley walls kicking up sparks as he ran at Tails.
“Now what did you say Tails wanted to tell us about?” Bunny asked Cream inside a hut back in Knothole. They sat around a small wooden table.
Cream was resting her chin in her hand. “Well…” her mind was clearly elsewhere. “He said he- wait no. He wanted me to want you guys about--”
“The Grave Diggers.” Celenie added suddenly. “the cyborg creatures that Tails wanted to warn you all about.” Celenie concluded quickly and nervously as if speaking their name would bring them after her.
Cream looked at the panther with surprise. “Do you know them Celenie?”
“Look at the gal’s face. Does it look like she doesn’t know them?” Bunny affirmed.
Celenie covered her mouth as if she’d just cursed. “Well……” She said quietly. “It’s just that….the Grave Diggers are: like me are part cyborgs. They are as their name implies killers. They may not personally dig graves, no not at all. They just fill them…”
“But you’re not with them right?” Cream asked nervously.
“No,” Celenie responded. “Not anymore, like others I was partly Roboticized against my will. I managed to break free from the programming in they installed in my brain. But there are so many others who are still under the control of Hallow who is the leader of the Grave Diggers.”
Cream’s thoughts drifted back to Tails. She didn’t know where he was. But she hadn’t wanted to leave him but he had forced her. Now she was here. For years she had been worried about Tails after their friend’s death. Now he was in terrible danger himself.
And after she had seen him for the first time since then he was… so different. So sad.
She knew he had sent her away to warn Knothole, but with his strange behavior she felt… as if there was something he wasn’t telling her.
She didn’t like it.
“Well then,” Bunny said interrupting Cream’s thoughts. “If them Grave Diggers are hurtin’ folks why then Knotholes ain’t gonna sit here and let ‘em go about their nasty business. We’ll help ya girls! You have Knothole’s help.”
Cream gave a small smile. “Thanks Bunny…”
Shadow ran at Tails with his two swords loudly scraping the alley walls. He let out a loud yell and crossed the swords in front of him in an X. He rushed faster and made a fluid slice forward to late for the fox.
“YAAAHH!!!!”
Chink! He’d hit something hard. Bone?
Tails held out the emerald in one hand. The small fist sized gem being the only thing between him and the blades.
“Smart boy, maybe now you’ll actually give it to me.” Shadow slide the blades off the emerald and flip kicked Tails in the chin.
Tails felt himself fall backwards his back striking the pavement. He jumped back up and saw a ball of red and black nail him in the face. Tails flew backwards and his head smacked into the wall. Before he could recover Shadow bashed him the hilt of Judgment Day and Tails felt himself hit the ground and was rolling from the impact. The emerald remarkably still in his hand.
He landed face down. He moaned as he pushed himself up with his elbows and was scared when he saw dark.
He blinked and saw dark spots all across his field of vision. Shadow had been hitting him in the head very hard and Tails’ brain couldn’t take it.
Tails saw every thing get darker and realized the shadow of the enemy had fallen over him. He rolled over and say a blade bury itself into the ground where he had been. The blade was so close he could see his reflection in it even with his distorted vision. He hoped dearly this wasn’t permanent. It was like looking through binoculars covered all over with hard black dirt.
Tails kept rolling as Shadow repeatedly tried to skewer him. But it was hard to do one handed.
Tails ran out of breath and inhaled a big gulp of air. As he saw the point of the blade came at him he flung himself to the side again and lunged forward grabbing one of the swords in Shadow’s hand.
Shadow tried to throw him off but Tails forced himself to fall backwards and wrenched the weapon from the hedgehog’s grasp. Tails gripped it in his hand and back flipped to get some distance away from Shadow.
The hope for that vanished as Shadow shot at him again blade glinting dangerously. Tails guarded and bent a bit from the blow.
Shadow made himself ricochet of like bullet and landed crouched with the sword pointing to the side again. He stood still studying Tails looking for an weak point.
Tails didn’t feel like waiting and ran at Shadow. The black hedgehog jumped into the air doing an over head slash.
Tails jumped to meet him in the air. Shadow spun around in the air bringing his blade at the fox.
Tails did the same swinging his sword 360 in midair.
Sparks flew as the steel met. The two still in midair pressed locked blades trying to overpower the other.
They landed and both jumped back.
Shadow decided to break the rules and leaped back throwing the Samurai Blade aside and pulled his HK of his back squeezing the trigger and fired at Tails.
Tails had jumped to the side and his vision flashed white as he felt pain. He hit the ground. And lay on his side.
Shadow prepared to fire again and Tails sat up pointing his guns at Shadow and fired as he rolled behind some trash cans.
Shadow frowned and starting shooting up the trash cans and bags that were Tails’ shield. As bits of plastic bag and junk flew in all directions Tails dared risk a shot at Shadow.
Shadow didn’t notice but the round embedded itself in part of the wall next to his head. Shadow continued pumping the bags full of lead. Then he finally stopped.
“So, you planning to come out anytime soon to fight me?” He jeered.
“Throw your gun over here and maybe I’ll consider.” Tails said sourly still crouching.
“Sure you aren’t scared?” Shadow sneered.
Tails’ face darkened in anger. He whirled over the bags and fired straight at a startled Shadow.
The black creature jumped back wards and flipped to the side behind a car.
Tails came out from behind the garbage and fired repeatedly. The gun recoiled and shook Tails’ wrists as it fired spewing yellow.
Shadow felt the car shake as bullets hit the opposite side.
Then there was silence.
“…so Tails, where’s that annoying, blue, motor mouth Sonic?” Shadow asked from behind the bullet riddled car.
Tails felt the fight leave his body as the spots of his vision began to fade and he lowered his guns to his side.
“Don’t play dumb Shadow.” Tails said. Voice on the edge of anger.
“Come on, Tails you know I don’t play games.” Shadow replied.
“…Sonic is dead Shadow!” He heard Tails say from the other side of the car.
The hedgehog sat still in pure genuine shock… Sonic? Dead? The words didn’t sink in at first…
“W- what? Sonic? What happened?” Shadow stuttered. He’d been away from Mobius for a couple of years and his rival had died.
“Tch, you don’t know?” Tails said angrily.
Shadow stood up in view and shook his head quietly.
Suddenly they heard a engine roar. They both forgot the subject as they saw two cyborg bats fly over them.
Both were carrying cages filled with humans and mobians alike. Prisoners.
“Grave Diggers…” Shadow said.
Tails didn’t have time to ponder the name because one of the prisoners in particular caught his eye. Jacobson sat in one of the cages.
Tails gasped and spun his tails ready to take to the air.
Shadow shook his head. “Nope, that won’t do.” He said and grabbed one of the fox’s tails and yanked him down.
“OUCH!!!” Tails whirled around and glared at Shadow. “What are you doing!!?”
“Because we have other problems.” Shadow said. “like the return of my emerald.”
The bats were getting farther off into the distance.
“Shadow! Forget about your freakin emerald and get a life!” Tails said turning back to flight.
But Shadow grabbed a tail again and pulled him down. Tails whirled around to face the hedgehog eyes flaring. Shadow seemed completely unmoved . He just raised his finger and pointed at several cyborgs on the buildings surrounding them…
To be continued….

You complained about it you find a way. I always welcome criticism on my work because I know I can always improve. But simply telling me you find it cringy is terribly unhelpful.

Little kid? haha I hold down a job, pay bills and taxes. And here's the thing cupcake I don't know your brother and I don't know you so your "advice" really doesn't mean much to me. Become a better artist you say? Well I asked what I could fix and you gave no helpful advice soooo... yeah. How can you tell a person to improve if you have nothing to contribute? This is why I view this as flaming you make negative remarks while contributing nothing just continuing to try to be belittling.NOt sure what you intend to accomplish but since my goal is to improve and you ain't helping guess this exchange is ultimately useless.

For your age u draw like a 6 year old... and you say your trying to improve. That will never happen and even if I give you a "advice" you'll still fail. Your kind is horrible... and it's sad so good luck on try "to get better" cause it won't happen.

My kind is the kind that doesn't care what little kids think. I don't draw to please you I draw for myself and always will. I mean if you were a master artist or had art worthwhile maybe I'd consider your feedback but your just flinging your ignorance about. Don't get me wrong you're pretty entertaining throwing your shoddy house of cards argument at people you don't even know. Maybe your cringe expert brother can help you make a better argument?
Oh wait your argument is only "your art sucks" very convincing! Well have fun learning to argue. I'm off to go draw some more!
