More and more as I write 1990, the pop culture spoofs take a backseat to character development. Aaron was a challenge to write back in the early days - I wanted to derive humor from him being an overconfident douche who annoyed all his friends, but it took me an agonizingly long time to realize that characters like that are traditionally not protagonists. Sort of like how I originally conceived Jocelyn as the school bully and figured "Well, people will like her anyway because she has piercings or something, I guess." I used to be very, very bad at this.

I like this better, where Aaron is well-meaning but not too skilled. He knows he's not the best at doing stuff, but he doesn't let it stop him from trying... despite not always knowing how. And his friends actually like him, which is another one of those things that it took me a shockingly long time to figure out I should do. In retrospect, it seems obvious.
