Description
1990somethingcomic.com/I have a lot of fun finding new ways to bring back spacey New Age girl Denise. I honestly hadn't considered using her beyond that one story from January 1990 at first, but folks dug her so much, I couldn't just leave her at one appearance. You can guarantee she'll be a major player in the Woodstock '94 story once I finally get there, and I feel like she'll have even more to do that year than just tagging along to Saugerties with the rest of the cast. But until then, I couldn't resist having her cross paths with Rick, certainly her polar opposite in terms of personality.
Now, when this went up on the website a few days ago, several people informed me that aluminum cans actually don't have to stay uncrunched before you send 'em off to the recycling center as I'd always believed. I swear I'd always heard that growing up, though. Maybe it was the case in the '90s and the technology has changed, or maybe it was just one of those "common knowledge" things that people just assume is true, but whatever the case, I wish now that I'd done more research before I drew this one. Some people said the gag still works because it makes Denise look just as ignorant as Rick, just in the opposite direction, but that's not really how I want Denise to come across. She's supposed to be very smart, especially when it comes to protecting the environment and stuff like that - her problem is she just won't ever shut up about it.

I didn't find Denise annoying. Rick is a huge scumbag, though.
Also, it kills me when people say "I DID x AN' I TURNED OUWT FINE!"

I don't know whether to feel sorry for hippies for trying to do good and make change... or feel annoyed by them for believing certain things and annoying our regular lives with their beliefs.

It's only that you can't return them for the 5 cent deposit if they're crushed because the barcode reader can't scan them like that.

I feel so bad for Denise.
But Joel and Aaron's appearance at the end sure made me giggle!

Rick's a dick. I'd certainly help Denise and show her some love.

I'll be honest, this is one time the generation gap went right past me.. I was born in '92, so I think by then recycling was just something that was just DONE, period; you took out the trash and the recycling.

It's correct. Recycling was once something people had to be constantly reminded to do.

So what happened? People just get used to it?

It got easier. The recycling bin wasn't originally there; you just had a trash can.
To recycle you had to drive stuff to a designated processing plant, and separate everything into specific materials. A lot of people didn't bother, so you had special episodes of your favorite TV shows begging you to recycle.

How long did it take them to realize that it'd be so much easier if they just gave you a bin and took it there for you?

A few years. Remember that it was an entirely new service. Voters had to be comfortable with paying for all those bins and trucks for the first time. First the lefty cities got recycling, then the rest of the country when it got cheaper.

Poor Denise. High hopes can't survive exposure to the people. Of course is she in it to save the environment, or To SAVE The ENVIRONMENT! :world:
Ah, recycling. It was odd, everybody getting used to the new thing, which was weird by itself. But I have to admit, now 99% of my garbage folds up into the 'box. The rest is flushable. I don't know what to do with legitimate garbage anymore, if I ever had any. What, I'm going to have one garbage bag with one thing in it sitting there for months?

I once heard that some recycling plants discouraged crushing cans because it affected the weight of the recyclables being turned in, so they didn't have to pay donators as much money. (A bag of uncrushed cans would be a lot lighter than crushed cans.) Never found any sources to back up those claims, though.
