Description Here's my half of an art trade with my fellow GAC buddy , who wanted to see me take on the principal characters from the Famous Studios stable of stars. You may (or may not) recall that Famous handled the classic cartoon output for Paramount Pictures in the 1940s and '50s, and while their stories weren't always the greatest, their animation and character designs were pretty impressive. That's Little Lulu and Audrey in the front, flanked by Popeye, Baby Huey, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and Katnip and Herman in the back.

See? I know about more than just the Warner Bros. studio's classic cartoons!

If we were to have Paramount's extent, this image would've also had Betty Boop, Gabby, Superman, Snuffy Smith & Barney Google, and Beetle Bailey.

I have a Love/Hate Relationship with Famous Studios, most of their own series (except early-mid 40's Popeye) were pretty formulaic and dull, and the voice acting was pretty mediocre, but I do love the animation and angular designs.

They don't make those cartoons the way they used to.

Let tell ya a little story a true story.I don,t know why but pbs used to air old movies on the weekends. It could be 2 am and I would find roy rogers, flash gordon, the marx brothers, gene authry, the three stooges.Any way I came across a superman cartoon. But there was something that stood out to me.It was the build of the men.Anyway I was impressed by the amimation and the use off real world cars plains and trains. They just took out a few lines.Later on while in the liberry I picked out a book.It was about children tv.I came up on famous who did superman for paramount pictures.Who later went on to make popeye cartoons. Then I thought abรดut bluto big berriel chested sailer. So thats why superman build looked like I had seen it before. After I picked my jaw off the table.Talk about a shocker and a half wow! ย

Yeah I remember a Popeye movie starring Robin Williams as well as a videogame. So he shouldn't be in there.

Out of all those, I think only Casper really took off. xD Little Lulu got a new show at one point, but Casper's Scare School is kinda... eh. Other than that, the title is more or less right.

I'd pay to see Herman and Katnip go at it again, or Baby Huey.

TherealRNO In reply to Ari-Dynamic [2018-02-16 01:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Popeye & Casper (and to a lesser extent, Richie Rich) took off, you mean. Popeye's too non-PC to be done properly anymore, hence his regression as a famous character.

Ari-Dynamic In reply to TherealRNO [2018-02-16 05:07:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh right. :3 my apologies. Yeah, Popeye was pretty popular back in the day. Really sucks about that attempted movie not pulling through. :/

Ah, Popeye, I grew up watching black-and-white Popeye cartoons on VHS tapes. Along with Casper and Little Lulu. Those cartoons were so great!

Almost Famous is also the title of a movie from DreamWorks...which for a few years was owned by Paramount

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TherealRNO In reply to PikachuFanNumber9 [2018-02-16 01:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Ironic since Dreamworks owns them (excluding Popeye, shuffled off to Time-Warner, Inc. via King Features Syndicate) now.

Ptrvc [2008-08-18 07:52:13 +0000 UTC]

Popeye is the exception, he is definitely famous,

He has been animated by more then one studio

Originally he was a product of Fleischer, who also created Betty Boop, and did the really old Superman cartoons.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TherealRNO In reply to Ptrvc [2018-02-16 00:59:42 +0000 UTC]

Actually, he was created by E.G. Segar. The brothers Fleisher did the cartoons & originated the iconic theme song (along with public domain use of "Sailor's Hornpipe" & "Stars & Stripes Forever", also).

You know, I thought I could hang- or at least almost keep up- with you when it comes to animation history. I've never heard of Katnip n Herman. I salute you, sir!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jbwarner86 In reply to invaderjes [2008-06-24 14:25:29 +0000 UTC]

Katnip and Herman were sort of an ultra-violent version of Tom and Jerry - it wasn't uncommon for Katnip's body to get mutilated or for one of his body parts to get cut off at least once per cartoon. Matt Groening cites them as the inspiration for Itchy and Scratchy on "The Simpsons".
