Description
returns to my commission queue with another inspired "Hey Arnold" pop culture parody! This one is a direct riff on the video for Robert Palmer's 1986 single "Addicted to Love", with Arnold as Mr. Palmer and Phoebe, Helga, Nadine, Lila, and Rhonda as his pale-faced "band". (It's well known in music video lore that Palmer's backup ladies in this video didn't know how to play any of their instruments and just mimed the whole thing.) And for the sake of comparison, here's the original video - great song, by the way! [link]Related content

Oh lawd Arnold has a bald patch! I never knew!
I haven't seen this show in years, but I keep thinking it will only disappoint since none of your wacky scenes are actually in it.

I loved the Palmer videos. Wished I knew the keyboardist name to find out where else she appeared in.

Love it! It's the was the utter cheapness of the video that made it what it was. The stiff, odd looking models playing the instruments wrong brought everything together.( I heard their instructor quit on the models after an hour becuase they could not mimic playing correctly.) Had they spent more money on cutting edge technology of that era and went with something else, it would be dated and forgetable. Everybody can't make Thriller.
It's a timeless video, even with the Patrick Nagel inspired makeup. Phoebe playing the keyboard with one hand is a nice touch. Thanks!

If THAT'S what the video looks like, I'll pass. What I usually see in my head when I hear that song is much better. As I've said before, there is no excuse to just film the band "playing." That's demeaning to music videos as an art form.

What makes this one different, though, is that it's a deliberate parody of "just film the band playing" videos - it's shot as cheaply as possible, it's all filmed from the same dead-on angle, and not only are all the "band members" faking it, they're also not the real band, just some random models they pulled together. If anything, I think it's one of the most clever videos of the '80s.
