Description My ToonZone buddy recently celebrated his birthday, which through an amazing cosmic coincidence happens to fall on the same day as the birthday of one of cinema's greatest animated stars, Mickey Mouse. It was Mickey's 80th this year, so at John's suggestion, I drew this brief history of the mouse's evolution, highlighting some of his key roles through the past eight decades.

Included are "Steamboat Willie" (1928), "The Band Concert" (1935), "The Brave Little Tailor" (1938), "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (1941), "Mickey and the Beanstalk" (1947), "Mickey's Christmas Carol" (1983), and "Runaway Brain" (1995). Of course, this only just begins to scratch the surface of Mickey's long and varied career - but if I tried to include all of his best roles, I'd be here all day. Happy birthday, both to Mickey and John!

Well, at least you avoided that "Emo" from Kingdom Hearts, which was a good move.

Well I'm also with you on that "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" thing, and I also tend not to draw CGI characters only because you can't quite capture their style as perfectly as you can just looking at the designs of any 2D character (although there are a lot of Pixar characters that I just love and are always begging to be drawn ). With CGI you can draw them as best you can but they'll always look different from what they really look like, but with 2D you can draw any character and it'll look just like on the show.

Mickey Mouse was probably the biggest part of my childhood when I was little and despite the kind of cartoons I've watched later on I've never forgotten any of these shorts.

I actually found the "Mickey's 60th Birthday" special on YouTube (with Roger Rabbit) so seeing as it's Mickey's birthday now I should probably take the time to watch it. [link]

Oh, I just remembered another Mickey short you forgot: "The Prince and the Pauper" short from 1990, that was with "The Rescuers Down Under".

More than appropriate for the occasion.

Aside from Disney skipping Mickey's 80th birthday this year (God knows why), I don't think they've updated his evolution chart in a while.

Excellent evolutionary drawing! I've watched all of these except the last one when I was younger. I even remember watching The Band Concert in French several times while in Switzerland.

I have a poster almost similar to this hanging up in my bedroom. Hey, was "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" part of "Fantasia" or was it just alone? I used to own "Fantasia" on VHS, but I've misplaced it...

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was intended to be a standalone short at first, but it turned out to be so extravagant and expensive that Walt decided it'd work better and be more profitable as part of a compilation feature. And thus, Fantasia was born - and I'd say it was a worthwhile experiment! (Critics didn't really get it in 1941, but it grew on the public thanks to numerous re-releases.)

Ah, I see what he did there. I think it probably would've made a lot of money on it's own anyways.

I'm not sure if it would have - it cost an unbelievable amount for a short subject in 1941, and given that cartoons were basically considered filler in those days, it likely wouldn't have recouped its expenses unless it was part of a feature. I think Walt made the right call.

Fun times he's had in these 20 years. And not only is he in Square Enix cross overs, but getting a Transformers treatment, too!

Quite an evolution chart here. I'd mention a few more "past Mickeys" that would work well here, but as you said you'd be at this all that

Super work adding "Runaway Brain" at the end, BTW!

Last item is the Julius-possessed Mickey from "Runaway Brain" which app. suffered by being but 7 minutes long ! It should have been 70 minutes or, at least 30, long !These 1-reel shorts don't allow much plot development.

Aye, after learning how admittedly bland Mickey was in his theatrical days, it's really cool to see Disney give him some more development to his character, even up to "House Of Mouse" . Though this short will truly stand out from the rest of his run.
