My good buddy recently wrapped up his annual series of underwater breath-holding drawings, and looking at his work got me to thinking – I ought to work on drawing puffy-cheeked facial expressions myself! It’s always been a stumbling block for me, but after this round of Off the Deep End quickies, I think I finally nailed it. In my underwater scenes, I like to use puffy cheeks as visual shorthand for a character who’s uncomfortable being underwater. Spencer, of course, is extremely comfortable underwater – but he also has no problem making goofy faces for the camera
