Description By now, it's no secret that I vastly prefer the criminally underrated "American Dad" to its more popular older brother "Family Guy". But it was only recently that I really became a true fan, collecting the show on DVD and realizing just how well-written the show is compared to Seth MacFarlane's usual fare. The characters are so much stronger on "American Dad" - they have real personalities that drive the plot, and that makes the jokes about them that much funnier. I can relate to the Smiths a lot more than I can to the Griffins.

This was my first drawing of Stan, Francine, Klaus, Steve, Hayley, and Roger, done shortly after obtaining the first volume of the show on DVD. I had only watched the first few episodes of Season 1 when I drew this, but I already knew I liked this family a lot.

I couldn't agree more with you, Jesse- "American Dad" just seems like the better, more original show. Great take on the cast, especially on my favorite of the bunch, Roger!

At the very least, Stanford is smarter than Peter. I would still like to see more of "The Golden Turd" and "Mind Quad."

So, what do you think of American Dad compared to The Simpsons?

I've always found Stan incredibly hard to draw because of the chin. I did have his design mastered for a while but I've been sketching less over the past few years and now I'm really having trouble.

I've watched the show since day one, I can tell you American Dad dosen't follow the same formula as much as Family Guy dose, in jokes anyway, it could be the reason why people don't like it.

Hear are the only problems with American Dad though:

Not much is really wrong with it just the 1980's references, Rodger (the alien), talking animals, Steve's character (he's just so weak), Klaus (if your not going to use him, why keep him), Francine is just the same as Lois (maybe not all the time, but she dose have Lois' sexual drive), Stan I can stand most of the time but other then that I fine with him, Hayley tends to be a pain at times but she dose bring challege to Stan's republican views though.

And that's all I have to say about American Dad, it's fine from season 1 threw somewhere in season 4, I think. Enjoy!

American Dad's shark bait is Reginald. He's the only character I hate because he's a gimmick that came about during the strike episodes. Why did anyone think that a relationship between a human girl and a koala would work?

I hate it when people say that American Dad and Family Guy are the same. If you watch ANY American Dad episode, you will notice a distinct lack of flashback humor.

I cannot agree with you more. I saw seasons 2 and 3 for sale for 20$ each and I had to stop myself from buying them (since I already have a bunch of DVDs I haven't watched yet). Once I get through those though, I'm getting them.
Though it is criminally underrated. The best example I can think of is on Robot Chicken, when the co-creator who isn't Seth Green said "Hey, it's Seth MacFarlan, creator of American Dad!" and MacFarlan replied "Please, please, creator of FAMILY GUY!"
Why is Hayley so much shorter then Francine in this? I mean, isn't she like in her 20's and close to her mother's height? Other then tat I LOVE this picture. All the characters show so much personality in just the on pose you have them in.

In the first season she was working at a strip club where they served liquor. Don't you have to be 21 in the states to work in place that serves liquor?

American Dad is pretty good, and I have to agree that the show doesn't get the credit ir deserves. Heck even Seth takes a poke at the difference in the popularity of the shows on a skit on Robot Chicken.

Anymore I think Family Guy is going for more "college humor". I'm still a fan of the show, but I am starting to wonder if it is becoming a victim of its own success.

Is there nothing you CAN'T do??
Its about time more people discover American Dad, it deserves so much more credit than Family Guy yet is constantly living in its shadow.

You're gonna love seasons 2-4 (and 5 if its already out now), the show just keeps getting better and better with age.

in my opinion family guy is like is just american dad mixed with robot chicken, it tries to show a story like american dad but it relies too much on run-off jokes like robot chicken which are two things I like but not together. granted american dad is random at times but they dont change everything about the episode to do it unlike family guy which is like 10% storyline 75% runoff jokes of total irrelevance, and 15% things that should be done in 2 seconds turning into more than half the show.

American Dad also took a little while to get into its groove. I agree it's a very under rated show. lso if you've ever seen them do a table reading for the show watching Stans voice come from Seth is a VERY weird experience.

lol yeah i remember you mentioned the reasons to why you prefer this show, and I don't blame ya for that, it defenitely has its strength as a satire of politics compared to Family Guy that's a satire of pop culture, though I admit, i'm just more used to Family Guy cause I grew up with it more XD;. But then again, it show has its way of working, it probably has to do with the particular writers, i mean, can you imagine family guy no longer using cut take jokes? i mean don;t get me wrong, it'd be refreshing, but tell that to the fans who actually love the gags.

It's admittedly been a while since I've caught up with this show, but you are so right in terms of proper characters and storylines here. More to that, it's hard not to gain a keen interest in the female characters here, also - so who could blame Klaus?

Matt-the-Hydra [2010-06-18 16:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I also noticed the copious amount of humour when compared to FG. Why? Coz they actually don't break away from the plot to make some random joke about some celeb.

As I'm sure you've seen by now, JB, the proper term would be considered "Manatee jokes"...

The little I've seen of American Dad is a whole lot better than the past few seasons of Family Guy, combined. Although in defense of Family Guy, I did like seeing Meg get some revenge in season 8.

"American Dad" is a lot more character driven - whereas "Family Guy" tends to put its very one-dimensional characters into a what-if kind of situation and see what happens from there, "American Dad" actually uses its characters' personalities as the basis for its stories. And those stories are much more dense and linear, often weaving in elements early on that come back for a big payoff later. There are no cutaways, no time wasted, no labored jokes that wear out their welcome. It's everything I wish "Family Guy" could be.
