One question: 'What are the dots in the left upper corner? Are they caused by birds in the far or are it blurry bugs hoovering over the water?'

Yes, those dots. As I get the first dust elements on my sensor (although I do not change lenses, but you get them also by just using the zoom as that sucks air into the cam), I got pretty nervous when I saw the shot. But in this case it is not a matter of the sensor being completey dusted, but these dots are gnats! There were ever so many of them that evening. And the lense picked up some of them.

I am happy for you that it are indeed bugs (gnats) and not some dust particles on the sensor. That last thing is one of my nightmares. I try to cover the camera as much as possible when changing lenses hoping I don't get any dust inside. I've noticed some dust on the mirror of my camera (when looking through the camera), but so far that has no impact on the pictures.
