One of the things that really grabbed me about 40k when I was first learning about it is that it's not just dark, it's absurdly dark to an over-the-top level. And for some reason that concept of a scientific dark age after a technological singularity future being so twisted ignited my imagination. But as time went on I encountered people who preferred either a balanced sort of grim dark or even a bright aesthetic where things aren't so depressing. Fortunately, I can do either side of the spectrum in my 40k illustrations; but u can kinda tell that I prefer the darkest possible interpretation of the universe. So this is the start of probably a three part series where I compare the "ideal" version of 40k that fans have in their mind versus what I would describe as the most accurate portrayal going back to the roots of the series, where they had to be as dark as possible to differentiate themselves from other series.

What do you prefer? I get that for most people, somewhere in the middle is gonna be the best option, but another thing I really like about this series is how much it typically commits to the extremes. To me 40k is at its best when it turns things up to 11 in every facet.
