very nice did you use a rig or a tracking vehicle?

This is a rig shot that is made up of a few stripped shots. One shot was taken when the car was stationary and was lit with my three alien bees strobes. I then did a rig shot with the car moving and composited the two shots together, along with a third exposure for the headlight.

Ok, so I am just trying to understand and better myself, I have only ever done tracking shots. So both the standing and rolling shots were done with the rig on the car and then the rig is just photoshoped out, is that how it basically worked?

What kind of rig do you use? recommend?

thx

Yep, camera hangs off the rig. Long exposure is used and then the car is pushed over a short distance to create the illusion that the car is going fast. Than the rig is edited out in photoshop. I built my own rig out of bits and pieces, but it is a rig that utilizes suction cups to stick to the car. I would recommend you know photoshop really well before you ever even think about building or purchasing a rig. The editing out of the rig is kind of paramount to the picture looking believable.

Do you know any good resources or information about how to design and build a rig? I find rig shots amazing but am not sure how to really get started with them. I do a lot as tracking shots but there is a limit to how much you can slow the shutter down on a tacking shot.

Yeah man, I know how tracking shots can be. Automotiverigs.com is a site that sells a fabricated rig kit, but its fairly expensive. You could also sign up for the dieselstation forums at dieselstation.com. Easily the most talented community for automotive photographers and there is a good selection of threads about rigs.
