In Earth’s geologic timeline, no one had attempted to match Tyrannosaurus’ notoriety before the advent of the sabertooth. What program about life after dinosaurs would be complete without a focus on this iconic assassin?

Indeed, “Sabre Tooth” has to be my favorite episode of the sequel, though it’s neck-and-neck with “Land of Giants”. The story is that a veteran male Smilodon named Half-Tooth was kicked out of his territory by two intruding males. Now the fight is on for both sides—on one side, Half-Tooth struggles to make a living for himself. On the other, his former clan has to earn the loyalty of the two brothers.

I had no idea that such infamous teeth would be very fragile. The sequence in where the whole clan had to pin down the prey and subdue it before sinking their teeth look very believable, which is why I am a bit disdainful of how a sabertooth hunt was portrayed in Prehistoric Park as well as the Snowstalker from The Future is Wild.

The episode’s cast is really weird. Macrauchenia is pretty much a llama with a tapir-like trunk and Megatherium is a giant ground sloth whose claws can kill in an instant. The titanic armadillo-like Doedicurus has a tail like a flail.

In all six episodes of the sequel, Ben Bartlett’s score in this episode may not be the strongest, but it is the most distinctive. The recurring musical motif for the cats isn’t an instrument, but blades. Whenever you see them and hear their cues, from the ominous “Infanticide” to the adrenaline-pumping “Sabre Hunters”, blades abound, giving the cats a sort of sinister, dangerous image.

“Sabre Tooth” is, in and of itself, a pretty solid episode with a good story, animation and musical score.
