I used Golden Heavy Gel gloss medium mixed in with the paint. Its the most fun to work with!

very cool, have yet to use any gels; I've only been painting for 4 months but looking forward to it

If its available, I would definitely recommend taking a painting class. It definitely motivates you to produce work and learn new techniques. And experiment freely with the gels and pigments. You can get some incredible textures with all the different gel mediums they have out there!
