FOR THE RECORD: Yes you can "just blow up the tracks" which is why armoured trains exist in the first place! they are used mostly to patrol the Rail Lines in back areas, carry repair crews and material and protect said personnel from ambushes while working. Thus they only need a relatively light armament/armour.

In ww2: The German army thought armoured trains were obsolete, and because they neglected this essential element of their armed forces they suffered HEAVILY from partisan sabotage on the rail lines they had captured. They then were forced to construct a large number of makeshift lightly armed and armoured "Line protection trains" to make up for the lack of proper Armoured trains.

However ALL the Eastern European nations including Poland, Czechoslovakia (both of those were taken over and used by the German forces) and obviously the Soviet Union has armoured trains in their inventory and used them in combat as well as track patrol and occupation/anti-partisan duties extensively.

now in 2024: For the last year 4 armoured trains have been deployed in the Russian back areas to protect rail repair crews while they repair and check the railroads. This is nothing new as the the role of armoured trains has always been mostly to protect rear areas from partisans, sabotage and other lightly equipped but potentially very disruptive attacks on communications and transport infrastructure. The train itself is only light armoured and not intended as so many fools want to believe to fight battles on the front lines. The Russian armoured trains also operate in tandem with Drone and Helicopter support, so if you target the train or its workers you would immediately get blitzed by the air support.
