Hi Jeb, gorgeous painting as always. And absolutely fascinating to watch your process on the live streams!
One thing which struck me was how early you start shading and putting in volume. In the past I've always fussed about trying to get my outlines right, and then later, shading inside the lines. But I think I've been doing it all wrong. I've been thinking in 2d, then adding the 3rd dimension afterwards, and hopefully it works. Instead, I need to think in 3d from the start, and put shading and volume right into the sketches - then the 2d outlines just take care of themselves.
The other thing which amazed me was that you don't seem to bother with layers at all. Surely it would have been easier to put the sea, sky and palm trees in a background layer? Is that just some kind of self-discipline thing? I mean, would using layers just feel like 'cheating'? Or is there some other reason behind it?
Anyway... as I said... so interesting. I think I will learn a lot from these videos - thanks again for posting.

Yeah, in this instance, since I was painting directly and had no underlying drawing, I used fat brushes to define shapes and volume with color, rather than delineating. I work differently if I have done a drawing and am coloring it.
Also because of the direct painting, I did not use many layers. I find if I use a lot of layers while painting, I can get a bit lost. Coloring a drawing can be a bit more structured, with a lineart layer, a line tint layer, a flat color layer and a final painted detail layer. But in this case, I wanted to simplify things.
This flattening thing did trip me up while painting another piece- the gal with the electric bolts fav.me/d7ah80n here, as I then had to go back an break it into background, figure and effects layers.
I guess it was mainly a discipline and simplicity thing for this piece.
