The sound of the blades striking each other became a continuous staccato succession as the Sentinel somehow increased the pace of his attack. He switched styles again and again and almost unbalanced Max using broken time – sudden changes in the rhythm of his stabs and swings. The red feather cloak upon his back swayed and rucked up as if in expressive emotion; the teeth in his long, pale hair clacking against each other.

Max moved with a liquid grace. He twisted and leapt and spun - used the walls, the steps, the bodies and armour of his fallen adversaries to launch himself into ever more elaborate evasions of the powerful thrusts of the Sentinel.

Max’s expression was impassive, but both men were sweating freely in the chamber from their exertions.

But Max noticed a slow, creeping change slowly pulling at the the facial muscles of the scarred man, his white hair slick now with perspiration.

Surprise.
