i love the colors. the theme itself is very cool as well--although the theme may be debated. *laughs* your style is very peculiar, and i like that a lot.

cheers for oils, too!

"Peculiar", I like that word. Thank you very much.

Yeah, I love oils for color. Acrylics make a fantastic under painting though. Sometimes, I like the under painting so much, I leave it that way.

nixxy In reply to Jeff1966 [2007-06-16 23:04:55 +0000 UTC]

i've always wondered what that would be like, to underpaint with acrylics. although, my teacher always told me that the oil plus acrylic layering wouldn't stand the test of time very well. is that right, or i am wrong?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jeff1966 In reply to nixxy [2007-06-17 02:45:26 +0000 UTC]

It would definitely be bad to put acrylics over oil, because it wouldn't stick. And it would probably be bad to put oil over acrylic if you painted on canvas. Since canvas is so flexible, and so is acrylic, the oil that was applied on top, would most likely crack and flake off, as the canvas and acrylic flexed with changing temps. And of course, when it's moved from one place to another, the canvas and acrylic, would be flexed somewhat. Most pre-primed canvas you buy in art supply stores, are primed with acrylic gesso, and I don't trust them. So, with that in mind.....

I don't paint on canvas. I paint on masonite boards. They are made from pulped wood, so they have no directional grain, and so, they don't warp. And once they're in a frame, the don't flex either. I've got some fairly old paintings, 15 years or so, and they show no signs of aging. Oil paints never completely reach a stable point, but they are fairly stable after 7 or 8 years. But then I do use a good deal of alkyd resin mixed with my oils. Alkyds are more flexible, non-yellowing and stable than traditional oils, but their brushing qualities are not as good. So, I use it in a mixture with safflower oil, to make it more workable.

Sorry about the long winded answer, but I sell paint for a living, and I can very easily go on a rant about it. I love paint. If I've left anything out, feel free to ask.

*laughs* no, it's quite alright. i'm extremely new to painting, so knowing this is good for me. almost everything i've painted has been on masonite boards as well. i tried to get used to painting on canvas, but i never have really liked it much. although, it's hard for me to find masonite boards at the art shops i go to.. the only resource i had was my school, and now that i've graduated i'm not sure where to get them.

it's good to know i can mix paints on masonite boards, though. i'd like to practice oils some more, even though i hate painting with them, i love how vivid the colors are in comparison to acrylics.

sorry i don't have much academia to discuss with you in repsonse, but i am a super newbie. all of my art was digital until about 8 months ago. :/

Man, you're going to love to hear this then. Don't buy masonite at art stores, they charge way too much for it. If you have a circular saw, or a jig saw, you can cut it yourself. I have a friend who cuts them with a hand saw. Don't know how he keeps a straight line, but anyway. You can buy masonite at a lumber yard for about 11 to 12 dollars (us) for a 4ft x 8ft sheet. There are two different kinds. One is light in color, like card board, and one is dark, like chocolate. The lighter one is the best.

Sand it a little, to knock the glaze off of it. I use 120grit sandpaper throughout the entire process. Then prime it with acrylic gesso, or my favorite, Benjamin Moores 100% primer. (product# 023-00) I like it best because it doesn't suck the life out of the oil paint. If you apply the primer with a thin nap roller, let dry for an hour or so, sand very lightly, and prime again, you can get a finish almost as smooth as paper.

See, I told you I can go on and on about paint. I'll shut up now.

no, no, that's awesome. that helps me out a lot, actually. thank you. i think my father has a circular saw, but i could be wrong. either way, i like cheap, and that sounds a lot cheaper than buying canvas.

thank you again for giving me all this information.
