Athena actually is a War goddess. There's a lot of overlap in Greek mythology, and while Ares is the God of War, Athena is the Goddess of Strategic Warfare and War, in addition to Wisdom, inspiration, and nearly a dozen other things. It's why she was traditionally depicted wearing a war helmet high on her head, and often carrying a spear and wearing a breast plate.
