I prefered the good ol' Blue, Red, Purple and Orange masks. For me I prefered the 80's version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (But in the UK we dubbed them the Teenage mutant Hero Turtles) I don't like the updated versions.

As has been said... The original Ninja Turtles were all wearing red masks, ate all kinds of food, drank beer, & were some rough assassins. It was evident, they could be marketed towards children & so from the hardcore black & white comics & later graphic novels... They became all colorful & kid friendly.

Ahhhhhh I see, You know I never really thought that Leo, Raph, Don and Mike all wore red masks to start off with (I thought it started off as a TV show) I never really thought that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started off as a comic.
It's amazing what you can learn something new everyday, The more you know.
