i dig him alot with the shorter hair, but it makes him look younger. i liked the i dea i had of him being an older dude. i'll get over it.

I plan on making his facial hair grey to give him some age specific features. Maybe some more age lines would be in order as well?

The "chiaroscuro " is great. Perfect choice for the subject matter ( emotion being the focus ). My issue ( and only because it distracts from what you are trying to do ) is with the perspective. You got it right with the bottom of the buildings but not the tops. Check out this image . It should help clear it up...
