Story; Year 5
Catina genuinely couldn’t believe her scoring in Cadeaux, it took some serious time of staring at the results before she believed it. Thinking it was a mistake in the system given Apollo’s antics, but it wasn’t…They had placed 22nd. Which in all honesty? Was impressive in itself given how many they went again, and the fact it was so close to her brother's placings from when he had entered HCL a previous time before.
It gave her something to look forward too, excited her in a way to know that her mare was good enough to a least place In the top 30 but not only that. Where Apollo came from, her history…All of it. No one would believe this was the same mare if there weren’t pictures and in all honesty, Catina could not believe it herself. She was more than excited to enter Moscow with Apollo, ready to take on their opponents and see where they could get too next but due to recent events in her life, it was decided she’d step back from running Apollo and try someone different; GME Deadpool. Her sister-in-laws OTTB. A stud who matched Apollo in competitiveness, and even dare say, a stud version of her mare. The only difference was that Deadpool was more collected and behaved in the ring, he followed instructions decently without getting overzealous and going into little bucking sprees. Something her body couldn’t tolerate at the moment. So, it was decided…She and Devon, her coach and even teammate, would switch horses. Devon was capable of riding Apollo’s bucks safely and keep her decent in the ring unlike her who lacked the strength and just wasn’t able to rein Apollo in time.
Between Cadeaux and Moscow, she would go on to work solely with Deadpool, getting to know his quirks and cues. What worked well with them both and allowed them to be a balanced team, meanwhile Devon would take on her beloved mare and fine-tune her into the champion she was already becoming. Help her along the way, something she knew she was unable to do. Devon had more skill, she knew it and had enough respect in herself and in Apollo to back down and let someone else work with the mare. Because besides her own brother, Cap and Herself, Devon was one of the few riders who could handle the fiery mare and *not* eat dirt.
Day of the show, her nerves started again but this time she was able to swallow it back and keep more composure during this show. She knew there wasn’t a thing to worry about with the work she had done, and with Cap and Devon there to support her and be a crutch when she needed it. It gave her the confidence to go through the day and remain decently sane. Up until it was their time to run, from there she would climb into that saddle with false confidence and urge the large black stud towards the large arena. All while nervously chewing her lower lip and lightly bumping with her spur to keep that forward, upbeat, trot he had. Right up until the point she felt his feet touch and sink into the soft bedding of the sand. From there, it was no longer confidence but focusing on the mission in front of her; completing the course without any faults. It was a hard accomplishment to have because she personally lacked experience while Deadpool could easily go on to be successful if given the right tools and rider. But she aimed to not think of the whats if and negatives, instead, she’d go on to pushing him forward into the arena with the confidence she needed and the intent to win; Something she could feel even Deadpool wanted. Unlike riding Apollo, there were far fewer mistakes. More precise with her cues, easier on the reins and not so high strung herself. Letting the stud work and find his footing, letting him decide when and where to go but also guiding him and keeping things fluent between them. (Word count; 711)
