"Ezra had sacrificed his well being before for the people he cared about. He would do it again. Dume stared at him for a moment with... sadness? And instead of answering, he stepped over Ezra and lowered himself curling around them, covering them with his huge head.
The wolf would stay, for a while. How Ezra knew that, he didn’t know. He just broke down sobbing as an overwhelming sense of relief invaded him. He felt himself back in that cave in Atollon after Kanan and him had found each other again and held him.
“I loved you,” Ezra whispered weakly. He had never actually said it out loud. He had to say it now. I know. Kanan’s voice said. Ezra smiled and buried his face in the soft fur, wetting it with his tears and muffled sobs."

In the story Eli and Ezra became friends, but they crashed on the surface of Csilla - which is freezing cold. Too cold for humans to survive, so they almost died. But Dume appeared to protect them from the cold until Thrawn and his search party found them.
