Greetings, ye olde quarantined masses of the world.
For future generations of deviants wondering what on earth that greeting means, at the time I am writing this we are at day 41 (at least in good old Massachusetts) of social distancing due to COVID-19. A bit more down time than I am used to has resulted in this tutorial. So there is the bit of shining light. Yes, I am equating this tutorial to shining light. COME AT ME.
As with my other How to Eclipse tutorials (linked at the end), the goal is to help the community learn and adjust to the new version of DeviantArt! It can be difficult to learn something new whether you have been on the site for a decade or a day. So let us dive together into what is very commonly the heartbeat of many deviants' existence here: their notifications!

How to Find Notifications
You can access your notifications from anywhere on DeviantArt in two different ways. The bell icon in the header bar reacts to hovering or clicking. If you hover, you will get a chronological feed of notifications. If you click the bell you will open the notification center.

Live Notifications
The default option for notifications is set to Live mode. This means your notifications will update in real time as you meander your way across the vast community. A number ticker will appear next to the bell icon and increase as notifications come in. By clicking the Live drop down menu, you can see there are options to disable the Live feature or pick and choose the types of notifications you want to be alerted to:

The Notification Center
Clicking the bell will open up your full notification center. There is a lot to take in here! This is where anything you receive will be located. Comments, replies, favorites, likes, watches, and mentions for you and your groups! With so many possible notifications, Eclipse offers us several ways to manage what can easily become a nightmare to sort through (I'm looking at you morbidman187 
Personal Notifications
When you first access the notification center, it's going to default to your personal notifications. We will cover group notifications further down! Eclipse offers us two modes for organizing our notifications: Simple and Advanced. You can find the drop down menu (it will say Simple or Advanced depending on your current settings) near the top right under the Feed | Saved | Removed folders.
Simple Mode
It's just that... simple. A straight-forward, chronological view of your notifications. This can be ideal if you don't have thousand of notifications piling up or if you don't care what kind of notifications you're interacting with as long as they go in order. It will appear like this:
As you can see there is only one notification shown at a time, in the order they are received. For those who want to have a more organized approach, you'll want to check out... [drumroll plz]
Advanced Mode
Advanced mode introduces stacks into your notifications. What is a stack? They work the same way on new DeviantArt as the old one! Your various notification types will be sorted into groups and any notifications received for the same deviation/journal/status update/etc. will be stacked together. You'll know something is stacked because it has a paginated-view and... well, it literally tells you it's a stack (the highlighted bit at the bottom):
But wait, you want MOAR!? Well, you can have even more. See those filters above the notifications?
Filtering
The options above the notifications are filters that help you tackle one type of notification at a time. Here is how each type of filter breaks down for easy reference:
- All: Well... it's going to show you basically all of it.
- Comments: Any new comments you receive on your deviations (artwork, statuses, journals, forums, polls, etc.)
- Replies: Any replies to comments you have left around the community.
- Mentions: When someone has tagged you in something or shared a deviation of yours with someone else, you'll receive a mention to let you know!
- Activity: Anything someone has favorited or liked. Also where you'll be notified of new watchers and llama badges!
- Correspondence: Notifications that need voting on such as others requesting your artwork into groups or pending requests you have put into other groups.
Sweet.
Now that we have conquered organizing notifications, what are the options for interacting with all of these?! So glad you're wondering because that's the next topic.
Dissecting a Notification
There are a lot of things you can do with a single notification and most will be familiar... but a couple a new too! We'll use this section to break down the exact pieces of a notification so you can get familiar with where everything lives.
Pieces of the Notification
The best way to get through this section is with a visual and simple definitions. So that's literally what I'm going to do. I even created really terrible arrows and text in MSPaint like a baller. Ready, set, go:
And the simple definitions:
- Select: Check the boxes to select multiple notifications & stacks to bulk remove or save them!
- Direct link: Clicking the timestamp on a notification takes you to the dedicated browser page for that notification. Great for linking to others if you need to!
- Like: the
icon is a new for new DeviantArt (say that 10 times fast). It allows for quick interaction where you don't have the time (or perhaps the inclination, lbr) to do more. I use it when someone leaves me simple comments that don't require a true reaction from me.
- Source image: This is a preview image of the source of the comment/reply so you have an idea of what the person commented on!
But what about Save and Remove, Jen!? WHERE ARE THE SIMPLE DEFINITIONS? Chill. They get their own sections.
Saved and Removed Notifications
Saved notifications were brought over to new DeviantArt by popular demand. Removed notifications were created because of popular demand. We are a popularly demanding bunch, aren't we? But these two features add a lot of value to notifications!
By selecting either option, you'll move it out of Feed and into the respective folder you choose. Keep in mind that if you save/remove a notification and interact with it from the Saved or Removed folder, it will disappear!
Saving & Removing Tips:
- Save and Remove are one-click functions for non-stacked items.
- If you to try to remove a stack, you'll be prompted to confirm (phew)
- Save notifications that you want to find easily in the future but don't have time to interact with now (useful for those who get a lot of notifications at once).
- Removed notifications remain for 30 days. Plenty of time to go find something you X'd accidentally. No more need to panic, my friends.
Group Notifications
It's time to talk about group notifications! You might be wondering where they went. Well, my dear friends, that is what I am here for. Screenshots, yo, SCREENSHOTS.
Yes, that easy! There is a drop down menu next to your username in your notification center. Click that and it will drop down with each group that you're an admin of.
Filtering
The filtering options mirror those of your personal notifications but in case you only came for the groups, I'll define them for you again. Hold your applause, plz.
And your filters are:
- All: Yep, every blessed one of them
- Comments: Comments left on your group's page, poll, admin area threads, etc.
- Replies: Replies to comments you have left, typically in admin area threads.
Mentions: This could perhaps be a future feature since new DeviantArt groups are under construction!Right now group mentions do not apply (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
- Activity: Notifications for newly created admin area threads, new members/watchers, and departing members.
- Correspondence: Any group activity that requires voting. More on this below!
Correspondence
Because new DeviantArt notifications appear differently, I wanted to help break down a group correspondence notification (note: this is similar for your personal correspondence!).
This is how correspondence will appear:
Group Correspondence Tips:
- The "Awaiting Group Decision" icons are for showing you how many votes have happened and how many are needed total. The red icon stands for Declined votes and the blue stands for Accepted votes.
- The Decline and Accept links are at the top right of the correspondence.
- To access public view and admin view comments, just click the "..." icon and select View Log. You will be transported to the old DA version of the page since groups are under construction.
