Description
I'm currently taking advanced sculpture w/ John Brown at Gnomon and our first project is to create a dynamic head with very sharp and defined features so that we learn more about the planes of the face and how to create good old fashioned depth. This is my unrefined but essentially finished head maquette.

I love it , great work. Also pretty helpful for somebody (me) who still have to learn about the planes of the head.

Thank you, yes this was from a planes of the head exercise from a class. Keeping in mind the that cranium is a little small (or the face a little big) it is otherwise a workable reference for the planes. Glad it is useful for you

this is a great reference of how shadows and highlights are placed on the human head. Artists should try out sculpture more often; even if they are painters or just drawing.
Do you mind if I use this as a reference in a future tutorial in how to draw the human head? I will not use the photo - just draw my own cop/version of it. I will give credit of course

Thanks Dave! I don't feel it's fair to take full credit as this is a guided class sculpture project where we were instructed to create this exact style of head for use as a study guide but never the less, I appreciate your kind words!

It is clear to me that you have great talent. The head you created is amazing; I couldn't stop staring at it. Your ability to sculpt life out of clay is inconceivable. Thank you for sharing your work.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! Your comments are too kind. Before I let them go to my head I must reinforce the fact that while I did sculpt this head it's really not in my native style but rather based on how our teacher wanted us to be able to sculpt. The point was to learn this Bridgman/roman/fine art style so that when we went back to our own styles, we would have the ability to control how much we dial in this kind of dynamic, sharp chisled features look into part of our sculpting. That said, if you had this kind of repsonse, then what he was was trying to teach us must be working
So I thank you for the kind remarks but feel like I must say that it was very much a learning piece and not something directly out of my imagination.
