Description
Full view please, you really can’t appreciate this fully unless you do soWell, THIS was a long time coming! I started it, what, a month ago?
OK, explanation time. There IS a reason why the background looks kinda linear/flat instead of having Sonic interacting with part of it as such and/or making it look 3D (can’t explain it any better than that, but I’m sure you all know what I’m getting at), it’s not just me being lazy or anything, honestly
I’m so happy with the colouring; I think it’s one of my best CGing jobs yet. I inked it in Flash and then coloured using just paintbrushes in Photoshop, and a tiny bit of layer-tweaking here and there. OMG, layers! At one point I had -55- of them; it nearly killed my computer and I actually couldn’t open the image for a while at one stage because it was so bloody huge XD I therefore had to merge some of the layers unfortunately, which hindered me a little with getting it completed because it was harder to edit the shading. But anyway, it doesn’t matter, because I got there in the end ^_- Oh, and I know it’s watermarked twice, it’s not a mistake – I –HATE- art theft (I’ve had my stuff stolen before, and it sucks beyond belief when that happens, trust me) and I’m doing stuff like this to try and stop it happening again.
Overall, I am so, SO proud of this; I can’t begin to tell you how much effort went into it (I didn’t count hours, but considering the time scale in terms of days spent on this, I’d guess it’s somewhere around 30… o_o;; ) and I’m so pleased it paid off. It was a long time coming, and whilst some little things might have been done better, on the whole I think I’ve done really well. It’s the first time in absolute YEARS that I’ve drawn my own background; and it won’t be the last time either – watch this space… ^_- I mentioned this to a couple of people a while back but, from now on I’m not gonna limit myself to JUST Sonic art; don’t get me wrong, I love drawing Sonic, but now when I do Sonic stuff, I want to try and get it more like this – a picture that’s gonna be pushing my art to the limit, a good challenge. And when it’s NOT Sonic… I dunno, I’m working on a few things (all still video-game related though, fan-art’s how I started as an artist back when I was a kid and it’s how I’m gonna continue for the foreseeable future), but I’ll wait and see how they turn out. So yeah, I –am- still doing Sonic MOST of the time, just not ALL the time any more; and I’m gonna try and make my Sonic art noticeably better, too, like this. I seem to have been stuck at the same skill level for a while now with my Sonic drawings and I’m determined to push my art forwards more.
Anyway; enjoy! And feel free to post any sort of comments (detailed or not) – as always, I appreciate anything you guys have to say about my works ^^

Whoa, total nostalgia trip, heh
I really like this Jen, the perspective seems just right, and I like how Sonic's spikes are flailing behind him. Good blur effects too, and the background's very accurate...this is really amazing work, I must fave!!

Lots of shading and detail make this way past cool! The visual effect showing Sonic bouncing off the spring doesn't work quite right, but it is a cool idea nonetheless.

ZOMG. Wonderful stuff, Jen! This is a near-perfect picture; the only problem I see is the odd perspective, but that was intentional. Nice work!

Man oh man, where to start. Ok, I'll start with the clouds. I love the clouds, they look so Green Hill Zone like. In fact, if you think about it, they look almost like the ones you see in the prototype images most people have seen of Green Hill Zone when SEGA was developing Sonic 1. The water as well the effects of the water like the movement and reflections was very cool. The 2D background like the mountains and platform in front were very nicely detailed. The awesome background and platform in front was an interesting twist when combined with Sonic, the Buzzbomber and Ring (including the Bumper) popping out in front of you like that. It gives a 2D/3D look to it almost. This picture as whole almost looks like something else too. Remember (in Sonic 1) Sonic running through Green Hill Zone with all the Animals being all over the place after beating the entire game and then it shows Sonic stopping to jump right at you like he popped from out of the level. That what this picture reminds me also. Other then that, you did an excellent job on everything, awesome work sweety ^___^

You should indeed be proud of this. I think you did a fantastic job on this. Where to start? I'll start off with the coloring, I think you did a great job on it, and I agree that it's one of you best CG jobs. Lineart and shading are also well done. One of the features I like most about this picture is how you combined the 2D and 3D elements together. The background that you did all by yourself come out great. You portryed the zone very accurately. I really like the pose you gave to Sonic, and how he is "jumping out of the zone" and collecting that ring. I also think Buzz Bomber came out great as well. The color choices you made are perfect. I really like the detail and effort you put into this. I also salute you for challenging yourself with that background and making a strong effort to become an even better artist. I think this is one of your best works yet, and I'm going to fave this.

You did an excellent job with this! I just love the details and how it looks so authentic to the old school Sonic style. I love the way you draw the old school Sonic, and the perspective on him jumping towards the ring is quite nice. The coloring and shading are very good, especially on the water and the Buzz Bomber. The clouds do look great, and so does the rest of the background. The palm tree looks nice, and so does the flower; very retro of the good ol' Sonicy days. I also agree that Sonic's spikes would look like that if he were turning his head quickly. This picture actually reminds me of the end of the game when he does jump out from the background, so there's nothing unusual about that. I also think that the ring looks a bit too thick, but that's perfectly okay. I must say that this game provided me many years of entertainment (and it still does)! A tidbit of info: My favorite level from the first Sonic was Spring Yard Zone (I loved the music they played on that level, and all of the little hidden areas where you could get 1-ups and Speed Shoes).

I like Spring Yard a lot, too; I'm considering drawing it at some point, in fact ^_-
