Description So, this turned in to a bit of a beast, I hope it isn't too much text!

As promised, a tutorial showing how i painted this picture [link] It requires some basic knowledge of Photoshop but nothing too complicated.

It has a lot of theory that i've picked up over the years, so it doesn't just apply to this painting, but to any painting really.

I hope it's helpful, and feel free to note me if you have any questions about anything

Very nice tutorial. I winced every time you mentioned merging layers though lol, especially merging the final product. I've always learned to try and keep as many layers intact, just in case.

I used to be the same! There comes a point though when it just slows your painting process down. I still make new layers for things i'm unsure about, but i think of it as a safety net that can be removed once i'm happy with that element of the picture. After all, you should trust that you can paint over your mistakes if you need to. That can lead to happy accidents that improve your picture! Don't be a slave to ctrl-z

Just curious, but how long does a painting like this take you? I've yet to really nail down my own workflow, and was curious as to the length, since you've very nicely written out your own process

Thanks! Hmm i think this was about 10 hours? I am pretty slow given my work process never goes smoothly and i change it with every picture. The only picture i've timed recently was this one [link] and it took me 14 hours which is way too long really! That was over several days of small sessions though. If i'm free in the day i can usually sit for 10 hours and do it all in one go

Perspective is hard, but I think, if I keep practicing, maybe in a few thousand years I will learn this ^^
Its a really (and I mean) REALLY useful tutorial

Hehe, keep practicing! Once you understand why it works, it's not so bad. Check out some more detailed perspective tutorials too, but yes, the key is to put it in to practice! And thank you very much btw

I used to find it scary too but if you look up a couple of tutorials and practice you'll get the hang of it!

More than you realise - I'm actually coloring a comic cover that uses some of those color theory principles you mentioned and your tutorial has helped me to better understand what wasn't sitting right with it.

Thanks again!

Wow! I would have never have thought using grid lines That's a great trick. I'll be sure to use those now, since I never attempt backgrounds either...

But SAI has no perspective grid and I can't draw it myself T_T

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

JenniferEasley In reply to 3Rton [2012-01-30 12:41:25 +0000 UTC]

I don't use a pre-made grid in photoshop, i use the brush and click a point, hold down shift and then click the point where i want the line to end. That makes a perfectly straight line I dont know if this works in Sai but worth a try!

3Rton In reply to JenniferEasley [2012-01-30 12:45:46 +0000 UTC]

Dang sounds troublesome : O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JenniferEasley In reply to 3Rton [2012-01-30 19:53:28 +0000 UTC]

Lol not really, you become very fast at it. I don't know if there is a line tool or anything in Sai that you can use but it is worth it when you're painting buildings, and pretty much anything else really!

Wow this is amazing! O.O Just a question, how do you flip the image in Photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JenniferEasley In reply to kittycat114 [2012-01-29 16:14:56 +0000 UTC]

Oops! Forgot about that Go to Image->Image Rotation->Flip Canvas Horizontal.

I created a Photoshop Action for that (which you would have to google cos I can't remember how to do it) so I have it assigned to one of my tablet hotkeys. That way I can do it all the time super fast Very useful!
