I have kind of a vague idea about certain aspects to him. Like, I'm pretty sure he's a veteran and is currently backpacking around... other then that?

You could try placing them in random scenerios and wonder how and why they act a certain way.
Like why did he begin backpacking? Where is he going? Who packed his bag? What did he bring? When does he plan to go home?

Those are some pretty good questions.

I think he's backpacking due to unrest from war trauma and that he doesn't really have a destination or an idea of when he'll go back home. He probably left without really telling anybody either.

He sounds so lonely.
So would he pack a tent or sleep under the stars? What kind of enviroment is he in? Forest, River Side, Mountains, Public Park, Open Road...
Would he avoid people?
I guess he would.

Actually I had a bit of an epiphany! I thought of another character that I plan to team up with him!

Basically this girl is cursed...? Or something. Where her negative emotions cause monsters to literally crawl out of her head. She meets him and he finds the purpose his life has been lacking since being discharged by taking care of her and killing any creatures that crawl out of her head.

I could see them camping.

Well the girl ran away from home to protect her friends from her 'condition' and being a penniless runaway with, what is essentially, a ticking time-bomb in your head is pretty stressful. So, the way I figure it, he stumbles on her when she either about to 'punch her own ticket' or when a monster was about to come crawling out. After getting the truth from her, he can't quite bring himself to leave her alone.

Not sure where it goes from there though. The idea's still pretty new. ^^;
