This was my first portrait of this character, 1998.

John Constantine is a fictional character published by DC Comics and the protagonist of the comic book Hellblazer. The character is an "occult detective", in the tradition of Jules de Grandin or Carnacki, but with a strong element of "magical con man." The character first appeared in the horror comic Swamp Thing #37, written by Alan Moore in which he was a recurring character. He has also made regular appearances in the various incarnations of The Books of Magic, and has made appearances in many other DC Comics and Vertigo series. John Constantine was named the third greatest comic book character by the magazine Empire.
