really awesome high poly modeling, especially without sculpting tools. Very nice attention to details, like on the fabric folds of the corners of the shoulderpads. Your teacher must be proud Looking forward to seeing the textured version

it's quite smooth looking. I'm really liking it a lot. By the way, does 3ds max have as convoluted of an interface as people say it does? I've only dabbled in blender.

3ds max is actually one of the most user friendly of the bigger packages. I think you would find a lot of things in it that you like... especially if you are coming from blender. 3ds max is one of the top modeling packages and really has a lot to offer.

I've just heard a lot of mixed responses to 3ds. Some people keep throwing around names of other programs like maya and zbrush, mudbox, etc and I'm not sure which one is generally more of the industry standard.

JeremiahBigley In reply to IrvingBrew [2010-07-11 06:01:10 +0000 UTC]

They are all industry standard. Understand first that Mudbox and Zbrush are more for organic and inorganic-organic (broken walls) and only highpoly at that. Also neither Mudbox or Zbrush is a stand-alone program, so you would have to use it in conjunction with another 3d application like 3ds Max, Maya, ect. If you are worried about what is industry standard I would suggest getting away from blender as there are few to no studios who really use it.
It really depends on what kind of work you are wanting to do.
If you are going modeling I would really suggest 3ds Max, Modo, XSI. All of these are industry standard and really great modeling packages.
If you are going animation I would suggest learning Maya. Though I have heard of people who use Maya as a modeling package and they say it is great. Maya is also industry standard.

I use 3ds max and have been for 7 years. I think it is a great program. A very large amount of studios use it and people say it is the most user-friendly 3d package out there. I personally still hate maya's interface... it just seems really crazy with menus and BS that is just kinda in your face.

Everyone is going to be biased with the program they use... but the industry doesn't lie. The top programs are 3ds max, Maya, Modo, XSI... So I would suggest going with one of those. If you have any questions just ask.

These days models like these are pretty much always done with sculpting. I'm very impressed you managed to do this with modelling.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeremiahBigley In reply to oulyt [2010-07-01 16:30:26 +0000 UTC]

? I looked at you models and I doubt that you started yesterday... They are actually pretty good!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oulyt In reply to JeremiahBigley [2010-07-01 16:35:46 +0000 UTC]

i meant i started yesterday with Max haha, should of been more clear, trying to learn the UI and everything now.

that other stuff is Maya/Modo/c4D trying to find the best program for me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeremiahBigley In reply to oulyt [2010-07-02 13:07:03 +0000 UTC]

I feel like max has a lot to offer for modelers. Now that they have the Graphite tools. There are a couple of tools in 2011 that they changed and are now a little buggy and keeping me from switching over... but for Modelers they say Max and modo are the way to go!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oulyt In reply to JeremiahBigley [2010-07-02 13:52:11 +0000 UTC]

yeah that's what i hear, i've been testing max 2011, don't see the buggy tools but i've never used max before haha. it looks good to me, and i'm moving to max from using c4d first then modo then Maya, so i've tried them all until i found my favorite one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeremiahBigley In reply to oulyt [2010-07-02 13:57:07 +0000 UTC]

once you have tested them all you should let me know which one you like for modeling. I want to learn another in the future.

i plan on posting a journal note with my likes and dislikes between all of them and which one i like the best sometime in the near future
