Description
Parrots make up a very broad order that includes more than 350 birds, such as macaws, amazons, parrots, lovebirds and cockatoos.
Despite the great variety of birds of this family, there are similarities between them. Them all have a curved beak and zygodactyl legs, that is, they have four toes on each paw: two are directed forward and two backward. Most parrots eat fruits, flowers, shoots, nuts, seeds and some small animals such as insects.
Parrots live in regions of warm climate and are found all over the world. Australasia, Central and South America have the greatest diversity.
Many parrots, such as macaws, amazons, carolinas, parakeets and cockatoos, are raised as pets. These birds have accompanied man throughout history due to their intelligence, charisma, color and musicality. Some may imitate sounds that are not typical of birds, including human speech. The male African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus), which lives in the rainforests, is an amazing imitator: it is the animal that best reproduces human speech in the world.
