Description
You know how if someone is missing for 7 days you can legally declare them dead? I believe that if you don't hear from the client for a month, you can declare the project dead. This was supposed to be a record cover. I was timid about working for a band again, as I have had lots of bad experiences with them in the past. I took a chance and accepted a cover job for a small band, and a small fee. Behold! I did the work, didn't get paid, and the band is nowhere to be found. ::Sigh:: I will never do that again. This is mixed media. It's a charcoal, pencil, and white gouache drawing, colored digitally. I think it's a great way to work. It has the speed and flexibility of digital, with the texture and "artist's hand" that makes traditional so nice.

yeah, working for bands. Dont do it. My favorite part is the look of surprise and shock when they realise you actually want to be paid for doing work for them, and are not one one of their groupies waiting to lick their asses. What is it about musicians that makes them able to bitch and moan about how people dont respect their art, and then turn around and do it to you?

With small punk and hardcore bands, they play for free most of the time. If they get paid it's like a bonus, so they expect that you draw for free. I think that's the mentality. Doesn't give them the right to fall off the face of the earth and leave me hangin' though.

just super rad.
i've only done art for my bands and people i know because i fear these exact scenarios.
this process really makes sense to me although charcoal is a little too messy for me.
i'm basically just a coward

I was afraid of the charcoal, but it wasn't too messy. I've had good luck using just pencil as well.

Lame they decided to cheap out on you, but you made an incredible piece either way at least. Love the details, and the white gouache gives it a perfect touch!

fuck working for bands dude. The majority of my experiences with bands have gone just like this one... that said this is a really cool piece dude, there are zillions of cthulu pieces but I've never seen it approached like this before. very cool my man

Yeah, they're a nightmare. I've had some bands that were cool, but overall it's much more trouble than it's worth. I'm glad you like this one. I think it's really successful because it's scary, iconic, eye catching, and it would read well on a CD cover. There's a crazy amount of Cthulhu peices out there, but it's almost always the giant cthulhu in the ocean and some dark clouds. I kinda think they're boring haha

agreed. they get boring just from seeing the same kind of piece repeatedly. What I thought worked great for you was the fact that it was an extreme close up. We don't see all of him with the wings and what not, but instead without a label and seeing the dangling tentacles we would be left to assume we are looking into the eyes of cthulu. Which brings me to what I thought was best. The eyes are surprisingly human. They are wide and bright, not what I would expect at all. I just gotta love that irony.

Precisely! I've seen a lot of full body images of the character and they don't stand a chance of being scary, especially not in the "look at him and you'll go mad" way. He's just a big Zoidberg with added bat wings, really.
