Description I have always wanted to try and draw Miss Nastia Liukin, a Gold medal winning Gymnast from America. Well I think I did an ok job on this one. It was very hard to do the background for me, it did not turn out great but I might still work on it from time to time. I like how she turned out though, and her pose I just love, it is strong, graceful and just simply fearless.

Her face turned out well I feel also, especially considering it is an inch in diameter, and I am quite awful working that small.

Made with colored pencils of course!

Wow! At least you can draw realism in colored pencils! But not me.

Thanks, at times I can, really just takes practice, after a few hundred drawings I became ok.

Hi! I have been watching you for awhile. Great work in general but this one is wonderful! I love your composition and balance. I don't mind the background except it might be a little too colorful becoming distracting. The shine on her outfit is great. And the skin tones are flawless. You have some great pieces.

Thank you so much, I am honored, coming from a skilled experienced artist like yourself. I agree the background is a little light, I can always go back and darken it, tried but did not put enough black and added too much dark brown. I have always been drawn to her as a gymnast and dance is a wonderful art form! Might try correcting that background at some point. Thanks again!

Thanks, I wish I did a little better job on her face but it was so small, only about an inch, I always have trouble with faces that small. She is such a beautiful athlete.

I really like this one! You did a wonderful job capturing the intense look on her face. Her muscles look very realistic too and I get a sense of movement which makes it feel as if I am watching her live! As for the background, I like it up in the right hand corner the best where it is a bit more blurred, since the focus is on her and not them. Have you ever tried using solvent on colored pencils? I might use that to blend the background up a bit. Anyway.... keep up the good work.

JeremyOsborne In reply to SandieBlair [2010-11-11 15:54:52 +0000 UTC]

I just fixed it a little, darkened it a great deal, thanks for the tip. No I have never used solvent, usually I find a color to go over the top of it and I did end up using gray and dark browns to cover it. Glad you like it though!

Hope it's okay to leave you a rosy comment...

Wow, you used grays and dark browns for your blending??? Well that's unique as well as perfectly and astonishingly exicuted! I used to use a white pencil for a some of my blending but once I discovered Prisma had/has a colorless blending pencil, I've started using that and found it's the best invention in the world if you want an unadulterated blend. I highly recommend it. The pencil is awesome and a must have tool for color drawing.

Your works are already exquisite hon and if you don't already have a blender pencil, I don't doubt they'd make your pictures even better! Plus you can also use a blending stump too for the blending and that leaves color vibrantly intense as it really seems to polish things up. I admire your know-how of blurring the background...something I'm not brave enough to attempt yet. Please do keep up the beautifully stunning work!

Thanks, glad you like it. Yeah I know of colorless blenders and blending stumps. I use them from time to time, they work well but I ideally want to use a colored pencil that is a lighter color to blend. For example using a white to blend or orange or dark brown. I only really use color less blenders when I want an edge clean or when I want a black background completely black. I use my fingers at times to blend colors together as well. I was not extremely pleased with this background but it turned out ok and got the point across of being out of focus.

Very interesting. Imma gonna have to put those techniques into practice. I suppose that really would be a good skill to have being light casts a color/haze of some sort, especially depending on where you're located and what time of day. Never really thought about it, but light does tend to cast sometimes a greyish overtone to things like what's represented here. I think that's what makes this picture look so real and alive.

I personally hate doing backgrounds but without them....well... you've got an image that ends up falling into stock category. The main subject image only tells half the story, the background generally fills in all the rest. This year, I'm striving for practicing backgrounds; because even if they take longer, they make an image so much more. I think you did a good job on the background, especially considering nobody cares about the people in the audience, only the gorgeous woman performing so their level of detail doesn't have to be high. And the more I study this, the more obvious it becomes there's much to be learned from it so it's going in my favorites.
