Description
WB Marketing Art, HAPPY FEET, Toddler Mumble. Pencil, Prismacolor marker.Found this old art in the closet. This is a marker comp I did for the Mumble pose that is posted elsewhere in my gallery. I worked this up as an example for the digital artists in my department, the freelance painter, and the project art director to show how I believed the colors and tones should be treated in realistic light. My intent was to conform to the image in the film as closely as possible. But of course, they all ignored this rough example, and did it their own way.
C'est la vie.

WAAAAH??? Why didn't they do it this way??? O_O This is so cool, Mumble looks so much cuter!!! >//< How to explain... the way they did it made everything look soft and fuzzy (which is fine for a penguin I guess... but are they really that fuzzy? o_O ) but this makes everything look sharp and fuzzy in a prickly way ^^ (like my old teddy bear, only with two eyes, not just one hanging on for dear life).

Yikes! Sounds like you shoulda taken that teddy to a stuffed eye-doctor.
And yeah, li'l Emperor penguins do start out all soft and fluffy. The filmmakers got it right.
My crisp line art is merely a translation made necessary by specific limitations.
Thank you for the kind words, and the charming anecdote.

so fluffy and cute The tones fit pretty nicely due to all of the lighting effects from the icy conditions.
Brilliant as always <3

Damn it, Jerome. I knew you could draw anything well but even a penguin? That's just not fair.

If you think Jeromes Penguins are badass you should see his Ring Tailed Marmoset. Now THAT is something else.

I did not intend for that comment to have any gay connotations, whatsoever. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Being gay or making gay comments is totally fine. It's just that I wasn't making one in this case.

What are you talkin' about? Neither did I! HaHaHa!
Folks will always see what they wanna see.
...until they drive smack into a tree.
Besides, The Flintstones loved to have "a gay old time."

You'd be surprised the things you learn to draw well, Jeff, when the executives threaten to kill your pet sea monkeys.

I suppose that was the whole point. Aside from the obvious penguin tuxedo joke, Mumble wasn't able to fit in with his community. The spontaneous tap-dancing was just one way for the filmmakers to convey this. The lingering pre-adolescent fluff was another.

Great work on Mumble's eyes... they look a little lighter than I remember, but it's totally him!

Thanks.
They are. In the interest of clarity, I used lighter hues so as not to obscure any details. Rather than accurate color, this was basically a rough indicating tonal placements, and how they might behave in that icy environment, with all the reflected light.

Very nicely done. Didn't like this movie much myself, and I like most animated films, but nicely done. I kinda felt the same way about Polar Express. They're watchable though.
