Description
Comic Book Cover Art, DC Comics, STAR TREK. Pencil, Ink, Brush, Pen, Opaque gouache. With a 3-issue story arc featuring a flashback account by Commander Chekov, I elected to do another series of linked cover images, this time as a three-part "triptych." After collecting each issue, the comic book fan could lay the issues side-by-side in sequential order and behold the full image. The essential thing I had to keep in mind was to make each individual cover design still work independently.
My favorite element is the vintage ENTERPRISE.
Interestingly, Paramount execs headed me off on the image of Kirk in distress, appearing to scream. They figured this was too unflattering for the character, and for Shatner. Despite my relating the fact that my reference was derived from an actual still from The Gamesters of Triskelion, I was urged to replace the image with something more "dignified." This is so ironic, since Shatner is so well known for acting rather broadly, and to this day does everything to discard his dignity! And let's not forget his screaming rant in The Wrath of KHAAAAAANNNN!!! Or his wonderfully campy musical albums.
My editor also had me "adjust" McCoy's mouth to be more "keyed back" and neutrally eye-pleasing. Whatever. Nevertheless, I present the original "embarrassing" images here, unaltered. But this is from a very bad photostatted copy. My apologies for the poor line quality.

Very nice! In your description, you allude to other linked covers. Do you mean that more of your Star Trek covers were designed as linked covers?

Not meant as criticism on the artist who drew the panels of the comics but I wished you had handled interior art as well.

This was a 3-issue story arc, focusing on Chekhov.

Your likenesses are astounding. I think both the Kirk & McCoy expressions convey a sense of urgency and drama necessary for a comic book cover. I would be more inclined to pick up a cover that makes me ask, "Ooh, what horrible situation does Kirk have to get out of now?" than one that's static "keyed back" representations of characters I know, no matter how well rendered.
I love also the phaser and communicator elements bookended at the sides of the piece.
My only complaint is the apparent lack of Sulu, but obviously the focus of this issue was Checkov, so that may have been intentional.

Thanks so much!
Yes, Sulu and Scotty didn't make the cut for this 3-issue story arc cover. But they were in our hearts.

I like this one better than the one you described. Kirk's facial expression actually compels me to find out what happened to make him make it in the first place!

I have to agree with the above poster, this would have made a great cover.

So, you're the guy responsible for three of my all-time favorite comic book covers? Heh..I used to tote around the first issue of this wrap-around with me to one of my art classes every day because it felt so inspired. Wonderful piece, this is!

Click the "download" button for a large view, RadioMan. But the scan is still from a poor-quality photostat, so fine details have burned away.

No, heh. But the communicators did too. Those helmets on the old space suits. They looked like the covers on electric shavers back in the day... I'm dating myself I know. Um... [link]

NOW I see what you're talkin' about. lol
You're hardly dating yourself (unless you're VERY lonely!), since the shows are always being rerun. I never saw them the first time they aired, but I've come to know them all backwards and forwards.
Yeah, ironically, they always seemed to get into close "shaves" whenever they wore those EVA suits. I always think of Kirk's plight in "The Tholian Web." Emmy winning episode.
