Thanks! Β They are about the same in terms of sculpting. Β Smaller ones are harder to get fine details in, large ones are harder to support. Β The large ones are definitely harder to mold and cast though.Β

hey jerry. what are the material costs (clay) for such a big figure?

jerpelletier In reply to hurzdischnurz [2013-04-15 21:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm..lets see....
I've got about 5 cans of spray foam at $8 a can. Probably $50 in clay. $20 worth of armature wire. Two cans of bondo at $11 a can. Some found chicken wire...
I'm going to chop it off at the knees and make a new base out of welded steel because I don't care for the shape that I've got going now, plus I want to make it a couple feet taller.

So I've got about $130 into it now, and will spend another $20 or so before it's done.
Casting in bronze will cost about $16,000. I can't cast her till someone buys her.

16.000? i had thought about 3-4000 for some cast this size.

thanks for answering, very informative.
and of course very lovely and aesthetic design with charme.

I haven't heard of Xavant. Is it the same thing as Chavant?
If it is, they are about the same in texture. They are both very smooth, but klean klay does not have a solvent and it does not react well to heat so you must sculpt everything very precisely. You cannot sculpt rough textures and then heat them for smoothing effects, or go over them with a solvent to knock back texture. It all has to be sculpted.
Chavant is much better clay. I would be using that if it were more affordable.

Very Nice! i didnt knew the Klean Klay. Do you know Xavant? if the answer is yes, could you give a comparison between them?
I hope you sell it as soon as finished it.
I really wanna see the brass finishing.
Best regards.

This piece seems to be so heavy and needs a stronger base indeed.
the clay seems xavant,it's that correct?
Whats will be the final media? brass?thanx for the reply.

jerpelletier In reply to miguelzuppo [2013-03-27 01:05:19 +0000 UTC]

It's not as heavy as it looks because the core is made of wire and insulation foam. The whole thing is only about fifty pounds. The clay I'm using is Klean Klay and I intend to make a bronze of her when the sculpt is done. First I'll have to sell her though, because I cannot afford the bronze.

jerpelletier In reply to miguelzuppo [2013-03-26 18:28:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah me to. I've still got to chop the base off and rebuild it. I began it with wood and foam, but couldn't make a strong enough base in the shape that I wanted with those materials. I have since learned to weld.

I don't really understand a thing about sculpture. I wonder how hard it is and how much time it takes to finish a work like this. Either way, it looks really good.

WynterPhoenyx [2013-03-21 21:09:13 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful piece, and the one in the back made with brown looks really pretty I'm in love with sculptures right now and it's so awesome how sculpters like yourself can make such beautiful folds and flow-y movements that seem very lifelike (though not in the sense that it could happen in real life but in the sense that it looks real at all).

If you don't mind me asking, how do you keep her head from falling off? Do you use wires and tinfoil to keep the sculpture light so it doesn't fall or is it at a certain angle that doesn't allow it to?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jerpelletier In reply to WynterPhoenyx [2013-03-22 16:05:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Yes, I built a wire skeleton out of 3/8" thick aluminum, then used spray insulation foam to build up the figure before adding clay on. Even though she's 7 feet tall, she only weight about 50 lbs.

Are those sculptures in the back made from clay? If so beeing covered on plastic bags prevent them from drying? THis is a medium I'd like to get my hands on, hence the questions

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jerpelletier In reply to Kaledrub [2013-03-21 18:16:08 +0000 UTC]

Those sculpts are made of Super Sculpey, which is heat sensative. If it's kept in a warm place for too long, it'll dry out even with the bag. The bag is more for keeping the dust off of it.

Many thanks for taking some time to reply my question. It's always nice to see fellow artists who've gained a certain popularity are still humble enough to have those atitudes. Thank you.
