Description
Do you remember the Super Mario Bros Super Show? ... Do you remember how AWFULLY the characters were drawn? Bowser was the worst, he didn't even look like Bowser... (To my knowledge they never called him that either.) But anyway, this is a screen shot that I edited with the correct Bowser Model. He's badly drawn on purpose, so that he fits in better.Related content

Aw man it took me forever to find this image again! Imagine if the Super Show lasted up into the N64 era.
Would they stay like their NES counterparts or would they change?

Actually, never mind. I was thinking that Super Mario Bros came out earlier than it did.
I thought Super Mario Bros came out in 1981 (which would make it pretty bad if Bowser still looked like that 4 years later) but I was mistaken. That art is from the year that Super Mario Bros came out in Japan; which is not as bad.Β

I kinda like that first one even though he doesn't really look too much like Bowser. It's still an interesting character design. Your Bowser kinda reminds me of the sprite from Super Mario Bros. It's pretty cute. Nice job.Β

agreed. Granted, someone else in these comments did mention that the animators weren't given a whole lot of art work to from Nintendo to work with, so I can understand why the characters didn't look right... but they were still drawn really badly. :/

To be fair to the Super Show though the animators had very little references other then best guesses as Nintendo had very little artwork to offer the animators to make sure it was game accurate.
Remember the only two games that Super Mario Brothers had at the time was games 1 and 2, 3 was not out yet and in the original Nintendo manual for the original Super Mario brothers you only had pixelated shapes(as seen here: [link] )
Any official references that the animators had were probably from Super Mario Brothers 2 and what they could tell by playing the games a little:
[link]
This is why the next series Super Mario 3 is so off in the names of the Koopa kids, again very little references as Nintendo withheld the names of the Koopa Kids during the production of the Super mario 3 series so once again it was up to guesswork.
The only reason why I dont think they changed the look of Bowser for both that and the Super Mario World series is that kids might have watched the super show and might have wondered where this orange colored lizard came from as for them King Koopa was green.
So the animators were at least consistent with their universe (albeit animation errors that are bound to pop up in the best of cartoon shows) but not consistent with the games.
The Sonic cartoons of the 90's had this issue too, but both Sega and Nintendo commissioned DiC to animate a cartoon for them to expand the franchise and it had mixed results.

Wow, you're a an encyclopedia of 80's animation knowledge. I can forgive the lack of correct character models, given what you've said. However, I'm a little offended by the BADLY drawn characters.
Though I agree with what you said about not changing Bowser over the course of the shows; both he and "Princess Toadstool" remained largely unchanged throughout the series, and it was admittedly less confusing overall. And at least by the time Super Mario World rolled around the animation had reached 'watchable' levels. Thanks for the info and your comment.

Yea, I could actually watch this show without wanting to bludgeon my head repeatedly if Bowser had originally been drawn like this. My eyes would still bleed, though.

*snerks* If he had looked like this, they probably would have still screwed something up. (it was a surprisingly shoddy show for being produced by Dic. o.O; )

The Koopalings were also given different names, like Wendy O. Koopa was called Kootie Pie. That caused no end of confusion to me as a kid.

If memory serves, I believe they couldn't get the copyrights for the actual game-named characters. It was either too expensive or NoJ wasn't havin' it, so they changed them. At least they were game fairly accurate looking. And of those shows, I personally think that SMB3 was the best looking/animated out of the lot of them.

I heard it was because they based the Super Mario Bros 3 show off of the Japanese game, which didn't have names for the koopalings, or so I heard.
Dunno if that's fact.

That could be true, I've heard that as well, that the Japanese Koopalings didn't have names.

Back then he was known as Koopa, or King Koopa Koopa, That's what my Mom and Aunt tell me. All the characters were based off the sprites I think. All the bad colouring made me love that show

I wish they would have based the show off of the actual game artwork, cause the green Koopa was really jarring. Such a terrible show, but God how I loved/love it. X)

Jesness In reply to selph-styled [2012-04-19 19:56:17 +0000 UTC]
Yes, though admittedly, when I was a kid, I hated Friday's when they showed a Zelda cartoon instead of Mario. At the time, I'd never even heard of the Legend of Zelda, so the cartoon was very uninteresting to me... Personally, I think that cartoon Link is the reason that VG Link hasn't said a word to this day... Now being older and knowing the awesomeness of LoZ I kinda wish I had the Zelda DVDs
