Same thing happened to a friend of mine, external hdd with 2 years worth of music/tv production and promos just fell off its stand,seagate looking $2000 to perform data recovery,then they discovered it was still covered by warrenty brought it down to $800 but still a lot of money
I can imagine the frustration it caused you and it always seems to happen to thoses thats are the most carefull and do backup their stuff,with the new position on here you could well of done without starting from scratch again,im sure you head must be sore or at least grew a few inches with all them ideas being stuck in there

I assumed it would be a couple hundred.... but that's outrageous.
Certainly my work is worth that dollar amount, but there's just no way i could afford it. i suppose after researching it, if I find that it's going to tear a hole in my pocket I might just have to resolve to lose it all and format it myself.

Find a small local shop,some have the equipment and software to do it and wont charge the earth for it,worth a try before you format dude !
