I enjoy working with Sculpey because of how cheap it is, but what's the best type you've used? I see you use a neutral grey a lot. Currently I'm just using the "teacher's/artist's bulk" box of white.

I think the important thing is the right amount of stiffness or density.
Regular sculpey is quite soft so I mix super sculpey with firm sculpey.
The surface of sculpey is a little translucent and I find the gray or dark
colors show the surface better than the pink stuff.

You just solidified my next purchase once this box runs out. Thank you!
Mind if I bother you with another question? What's an inexpensive armature wire for beginners like me (I'm used to working with more quarter-sized sculpts but want to go larger)?

There are many types of wire you can use depending on your scale and needs.
Try going to a hardware store instead of a place that sells art supplies, they
usually have a better selection and are cheaper.
